Iru, the 2011 Junior Eurovision winner and Georgia’s 2023 Eurovision representative, has expressed interest in hosting next year’s Junior Eurovision in Georgia.
Last Saturday, Georgia clinched its fourth Junior Eurovision victory when 12-year-old Andria Putkaradze represented the country with the song “To My Mom,” securing first place with 239 points. This win reaffirms Georgia’s position as the record holder for Junior Eurovision victories.
Iru’s Eurovision Journey
Iru (Irina Khechanovi) has a rich history with Eurovision competitions:
In 2011, she won Junior Eurovision as part of the girl group Candy with the song “Candy Music.” 12 years later, she represented Georgia at Eurovision 2023 with “Echo,” but did not advance to the grand final.
Despite the disappointment of not reaching the final, Iru remains committed to the Eurovision community. She has expressed her desire to host next year’s Junior Eurovision in Georgia, sharing reports of her interest on her Instagram story and expressing gratitude for fan support.
Iru’s Continued Involvement in Junior Eurovision
Iru’s connection to Junior Eurovision extends beyond her 2011 victory:
She co-wrote “I Believe” for Mariam Bigvava, which placed third in Junior Eurovision 2022. In the same year, she performed with her former group Candy in the artistic segment featuring all contest winners.
Given her significant history with the competition, it’s not surprising that Iru wants to experience a new aspect of the contest that has been a crucial part of her identity.
Georgia at Eurovision 2023
Iru represented Georgia at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool, UK, with the song “Echo.” The song, co-written by Iru herself along with Beni Kadagidze and Giga Kukhianidze, explores themes of love and listening to one’s inner voice. Despite not advancing to the final, Iru placed 12th out of 16 countries in the second semi-final, receiving 33 points, including the top score from the Armenian public.
