Australian broadcaster SBS has officially confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2025, set to take place in Basel, Switzerland. Australia becomes the 35th country to express interest in participating in Eurovision 2025, joining a diverse lineup including Austria, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Albania, Estonia, Belgium, United Kingdom, Georgia, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Malta, Norway, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Serbia, Portugal, Finland, Czech Republic, France, Cyprus, Croatia, Sweden, and the host country, Switzerland.
This announcement marks a significant milestone for Australia, as it celebrates a decade since its first Eurovision appearance in 2015 and coincides with SBS’s 50th anniversary. The confirmation event took place at the Sydney Opera House, showcasing Australia’s commitment to the competition. While the selection method for Australia’s representative and song for Eurovision 2025 remains undecided, recent years have seen internal selections, departing from the previous national final format “Eurovision: Australia Decides”.
Australia’s Eurovision journey began in 2015 when the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) extended a special invitation to participate as a contestant, commemorating the contest’s 60th anniversary. Despite being an “associate member” rather than a “full member” of the EBU, Australia has continued to participate, achieving its best result in 2016 with Dami Im‘s “Sound of Silence” securing second place.
In 2019, SBS signed an agreement with the EBU, ensuring Australia’s participation for five years until 2023. For the current and upcoming years, SBS must seek special permission from the EBU to continue participating, a process they will need to repeat annually.
Australia in Eurovision 2024
Australia was represented by Electric Fields with the song “One Milkali (One Blood)“. The duo performed in the first semi-final, finishing 11th with 41 points, narrowly missing qualification for the grand final.
Eurovision 2025: This will be Australia’s 10th participation in Eurovision. Australia joined the competition in 2015 and got its best result at Eurovision 2016 when singer Dami Im got second place with her song “Sound of Silence”.
