Moldova’s national broadcaster, TRM, has confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2025, set to take place in Basel, Switzerland. Moldova becomes the 37th country to express interest in participating in Eurovision 2025, following Austria, Australia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Albania, Estonia, Belgium, United Kingdom, Georgia, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Malta, Norway, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Serbia, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Czechia, France, Cyprus, Croatia, Sweden, and the host country Switzerland.

National Selection Process

On Moldova’s official Eurovision page, a window has opened for registration to the national final that will determine the country’s representative for Eurovision 2025, effectively confirming the country’s participation in the Basel competition. However, the submission window for songs has not yet opened but is expected to do so soon. Additionally, details of this year’s national final are not yet known, so we will have to wait for further information on whether Moldova will use the same format as in the last two years or make changes after Natalia Barbu failed to qualify for the Eurovision 2024 final.

Financial Concerns and Public Debate

In recent months, there have been reports on significant domestic criticism regarding the country’s participation in Eurovision due to high financial expenses allocated to the competition while the country faces economic challenges. The public debate surrounding these expenses raises pointed questions about financial management in the country, especially when other countries, such as Romania, have withdrawn from this year’s competition due to economic difficulties.

Moldova in Eurovision 2024

Natalia Barbu represented Moldova in the first semi-final of Eurovision 2024 with the song “In the Middle”, after winning first place in the local national final. The song reached 13th place in the first semi-final, with only 20 points, and did not qualify for the grand final. This is Moldova’s lowest result in Eurovision since 2016, when Moldova reached 17th place in the semi-final.
