Ireland’s Eurovision 2005 representative, Donna McCaul, who represented the country alongside her brother Joe McCaul, is interested in returning to Eurovision, this time without him!
Donna McCaul, who represented Ireland in Eurovision 2005 with her brother Joe McCaul, has announced her desire to represent Ireland again, this time without her brother, as a more experienced artist with her own musical career. As previously reported, the national selection “Eurosong 2025” will be used by Ireland to choose its representative, and McCaul’s voice is one of the artists expressing interest in participating
Donna McCaul represented Ireland in Eurovision 2005 with her brother but did not qualify for the final with their song “Love?“. At the time, the selection in Ireland was through a musical reality show called “You’re A Star”, whose final program served as the national selection. The McCaul siblings were 20 and 16 years old at the time, making them the youngest artists to ever represent Ireland. Since then, Donna has moved to the United States, gotten married, and advanced in her musical career.
McCaul is interested in competing in the Eurovision contest with her new band called “Identity Theft The Band”. She said: “I want to do it with the experience I got throughout the years, from doing music, different shows and learning about myself vocally and musically. This time around, it would be writing my own song with my band. It’s our own genre that we would want to bring to the stage.”
McCaul reveals that she drew inspiration from Bambie Thug‘s performance last year and referred to it in the context of the song she will write for next year: “There’s going to be high expectations. They don’t want a random song. We have to think outside the box, like what Bambie Thug did last year, that’s why it was so well received.” She says that the song she will submit to Eurovision will emphasize her wide vocal range and will be suitable for all ages.
Ireland in Eurovision 2024
Bambie Thug represented Ireland at Eurovision 2024 with the song “Doomsday Blue.” The song was chosen through the national pre-selection. Ireland advanced to the final after placing third in the first semi-final with 124 points, and in the grand final, they finished sixth with 278 points.
This marks the first time since 2018 that Ireland has qualified for the final, and it is the country’s best result since 2000.
