This Year Again? Will Guy Sebastian, who represented the country for the first time at Eurovision 2015 in Vienna, do it again in the decade since Australia’s Eurovision debut in this year’s competition in Basel?

The Australian star from Eurovision 2015, Guy Sebastian, participated last month in Amsterdam’s big song show: “Het Grote Songfestivalfeest” (in English: “The Big Song Festival Party”). This is a live performance featuring many Eurovision participants, including Loreen, Eurovision winner in 2012 and 2023, her runner-up in the last competition Käärijä, Eurovision 2024 winner Nemo Mettler, and many other artists. During the event, the official Eurovision podcast held conversations with a small number of artists, including Guy Sebastian, the Australian representative.

We also visited the event, and you can watch the interviews we conducted – in the link here.

So this year again?

In the podcast interview, Guy talked about his participation in Eurovision 2015 in Vienna, Austria, which, as you may recall, was Australia’s debut participation in the Eurovision competition, for the uniqueness of the 60th edition of the competition founded in 1956. Guy also said that at first when he was offered to represent Australia at Eurovision, he thought it was a prank, because Australia is not on the European continent and is very far from it. He then added about the quick and improvised process he went through with the song he performed in the competition, talked about his experiences before and during Eurovision, from the fans who wrapped the experiences with their passion, how he connected with Eurovision 2015 winner, Måns Zelmerlöw, who is also trying to represent Sweden this year and will compete in Melodifestivalen, and of course his thoughts on finishing the competition in fifth place, wondering “who’s gonna vote for Australia?”.

Then came the question of questions from the interviewer: Does Guy Sebastian think about representing Australia at Eurovision again? Guy Sebastian quickly replied: “Of course, I would concider, for sure”, but in addition, he revealed that he didn’t even know that Eurovision representatives could compete more than once, claiming: “I thought it was against the rules to nter twice”, and was also surprised to discover that Johnny Logan and Loreen won the competition twice each.

Eurovision fans believe that Guy Sebastian is one of the candidates who could represent Australia at Eurovision 2025, after the Australian National Broadcaster SBS officially confirmed Australia’s participation in the competition in Basel, Switzerland. With the news, rumors began about who would represent the country, and the discourse around Guy Sebastian returned to center stage for many reasons. Guy Sebastian was Australia’s first representative at Eurovision 2015, where he finished fifth with the song “Tonight Again“. Since then, he has hardly been involved in the Eurovision world, but it seems that in 2024 the discourse around him is starting to intensify again.

Why Fans Think Guy Sebastian Might Represent Australia at Eurovision 2025?

Participation in Het Songfestivalfeest in the Netherlands

His participation in the “Het Grote Songfestivalfeest” event in the Netherlands: Guy is participating this year in the big Eurovision event in the Netherlands “Het Grote Songfestivalfeest” (in English: “The Big Eurovision Party”) – a live television show featuring selected artists from the history of the competition, held on December 12th, 2024 in Amsterdam. Guy, along with Loreen, Eurovision winner in 2012 and 2023, leads the show with a special performance. Guy’s choice to participate in such an event is seen as an unusual move, and it seems this is a step towards breaking through to the European audience.

Guy’s Departure from The Voice

Guy Sebastian served as a judge on “The Voice” Australia for six seasons, but he announced he would be leaving the show. “It’s time for me to get back to focusing on my music,” he said in a statement, noting plans for tours in Australia and around the world. The show is filmed between February and June – which, according to fan speculation, leaves him time to prepare for Eurovision and build his path there.

A Decade of Australia at Eurovision

2025 marks a significant year for Australia, celebrating a decade since its debut in the competition, and there’s no one more fitting than Guy Sebastian, who first represented the country, to lead the celebration. The Australian national broadcaster loves to mark special moments in Australia’s Eurovision history, as it did in 2013, 30 years after the first Eurovision broadcast in 1983. In 2014, Jessica Mauboy performed as a guest singer at Eurovision held in Copenhagen, Denmark in the second semi-final, with her song “Sea of Flags“. In 2018, she was the Australian representative, and the last one chosen through internal selection before the launch of the Australian national final “Australia Decides” in 2019.

With a decade of Australia’s participation in the contest, and after the uncertainty that the Australian national broadcaster brings each year regarding the question of its participation in the competition, many details are still unknown about Australia’s selection process for its tenth Eurovision in Basel 2025. If Guy Sebastian returns to compete after 10 years, it could be an excellent opportunity for Australia to thrive again in the competition after failing to qualify for the final in the last Eurovision 2024. In the coming months, Australia is expected to publish more information regarding its choice for Eurovision 2025, which will most likely be conducted internally.

Australia was represented by Electric Fields with the song “One Milkali (One Blood)”. The duo performed in the first semi-final, finishing 11th with 41 points, narrowly missing qualification for the grand final.
