“Lumo” is the name of the Eurovision 2025 mascot. Similar to many international events like the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Swiss national broadcaster has brought back the idea of a mascot for Eurovision in Basel as a figure that would serve as one of the symbols for the upcoming competition in Switzerland. Lumo aligns with the graphic design of Eurovision 2025, which the Swiss national broadcaster revealed at the end of 2024, and is presented as a ginger character in the shape of an orange-blue heart. Lumo has wild orange hair and is personified with a face, eyes, hands, and feet.

The Swiss national broadcaster explained the selection and design process for “Lumo” as Eurovision 2025’s mascot: “It was designed as part of a competition in which 1,100 students from Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW and the Basel School of Design were invited to submit their creative ideas.” 36 designs took part in the competition, judged by members of the Eurovision 2025 organizing committee in Basel. The top five in the competition, including the first-place winner, won tickets to Eurovision 2025 rehearsals.

The winning design of “Lumo” was created by Lynn Brunner, a visual communication and graphic design student at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW. Lynn, a 20-year-old from Canton Bern, shares her feelings about her design winning as the official mascot of Eurovision 2025: “I’m over the moon to be able to design the mascot for Eurovision 2025. This will give my creativity a huge national and international platform – it’s a massive opportunity for me”

“Lumo,” the name of Eurovision 2025’s official mascot, derives from the word “luminous,” which relates to shining light, energy, and sunrise. The heart-shaped mascot design connects to Eurovision 2025’s heart-based graphic design and the official Eurovision symbol – the heart, and consequently to the official slogan of the contest “United By Music.” The Swiss national broadcaster explains Lumo’s design as follows: “Lumo embodies the unstoppable power of music. Its untamed curly hair blazes like flames, dancing wildly to the beat and reflecting the electrifying euphoria of Eurovision. With its bright colours, it illustrates the heat of emotions – from fervent enthusiasm to the warming comfort of shared experiences. Its big bright eyes, mouth poised to burst into song, and its expressive hands make Lumo a joyous ambassador of musical diversity and togetherness. As a gender-neutral and universal figure, Lumo represents unity and openness by bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together through the power of music. From the beginning of May, Lumo will walk the streets of Basel spreading the Eurovision spirit, like a living heartbeat showing that music knows no boundaries”.

This is the third time in Eurovision Song Contest history that a mascot has been launched for the event. In Eurovision 1990, “Eurocat” was first introduced, a cat-shaped mascot for the Eurovision in Zagreb, then the capital of Yugoslavia. In 1992, another attempt was made to bring back the mascot to the Eurovision world with the launch of “Eurobird”, a bird-shaped mascot that accompanied the design of the competition in Malmö, Sweden.

It’s still unknown whether this re-innovation will remain permanent and continue for future Eurovision contests like other fixed elements of the competition (such as graphic design, theme music, and font). Eurovision 2025: This will be Switzerland’s 65th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Switzerland joined the competition in 1956, being one of the seven founding countries, and has won three times over the years. Its most recent victory was at the last Eurovision in 2025, with Nemo’s song “The Code.” This win follows Switzerland’s previous victory in 1988 with the song “Ne partez pas sans moi,” performed by international singer Céline Dion.
