During a live Instagram broadcast yesterday between Malta’s and Finland’s Eurovision 2025 representatives, Miriana Conte and Erika Vikman, the artists revealed they belong in the LGBTQ+ community! Conte also disclosed her relationship with a girlfriend.
A virtual summit took place last night between Miriana Conte, Malta’s representative for Eurovision 2025, and Erika Vikman, Finland’s representative. The two conducted a joint live Instagram broadcast, discussing Eurovision, their preparations for the competition, and their personal lives. A prominent topic in the conversation was both singers’ affiliation with the LGBTQ+ community and their appreciation for the support they receive from it.
Miriana Conte, Malta’s representative, expressed her thoughts on the LGBTQ+ community’s support:
“I think they support us the most. Because they get the perspective, they get the message we’re trying to send”.
She referred to the subtle sexual references in both their Eurovision songs. Conte herself had to change her song title from “Kant” (Maltese for “Singing”) to “Serving” due to the European Broadcasting Union’s decision to prohibit the use of a word from the song as its title, given its similarity to an English profanity.
Erika Vikman also revealed that the EBU claims her performance carries too many sexual connotations, which could affect the competition’s audience. Consequently, she is expected to adapt her performance of “ICH KOMME” for the Eurovision stage. Erika supported Miriana’s statements and added her own LGBTQ+ affiliation:
“The queer community is so open-minded. You can express yourselves wildly with no limits, and it’s accepted. So that’s the healthiest community in the world. It’s my biggest inspiration, so I feel like I’m queer, because I don’t know what I am, so I say always that I’m queer”.
“Same!” Malta’s representative responded. “But… I do have a girlfriend!”
Erika reacted with surprise: “What?! You have a girlfriend? Omg, but that’s nice. I want one too!”
Miriana revealed that she also doesn’t adhere to a specific definition within the community, falling in love with people based on their personality rather than gender:
“But I resonate with you. I don’t know exactly what I am, I don’t like to put a label on myself. I think I just fall in love with people for who they are, so we’re very much the same on this as well. Thank you for sharing, Erika, because I know sometimes it’s a bit difficult to talk about these things, the queer community is so free and so open and you can be unapologetically yourself without explaining”.
Erika, Finland’s representative, concluded:
“Yes, you don’t have to be scared to show who you are and who you love, it’s such a free place. I hope that all people in the world will someday see how it feels to be inside of the queer community because it’s a healthy place.”
