Losing an Emmy didn’t stop Sam Ryder: The UK’s Eurovision 2022 star explains how he learned to cope with setbacks – and what it reveals about his music career’s trajectory?
Sam Ryder, the UK’s Eurovision 2022 representative with “Space Man“, opened up in an emotional interview about his devastation after losing the 2023 Emmy for “Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics” to Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers”. Despite his achievements, the defeat left Ryder deeply wounded.
The Crushing Disappointment After the Emmy Loss
During the “How to Fail” podcast, the 35-year-old singer shared candid reflections on his reaction to the loss. He discussed the immense effort he and Queen guitarist Brian May poured into “Fought & Lost”, their song for the hit series Ted Lasso.
“I Was So Hurt We Didn’t Win”
During the interview, Ryder shared:
“I was so hurt we didn’t win. We’d worked so hard, and I realized then that my perspective had been selfish. I felt awful in that hotel room—because that wasn’t me. I don’t see myself that way.”
Interestingly, Sam added that he doesn’t feel the need for ‘gold medals’ or external recognition. He believes it’s important to remain true to your work and invest all your heart in it. However, he couldn’t ignore that feeling of disappointment that penetrated deep into his heart at that moment:
“I know if I did my best work and met the expectations of my family and dear ones. I don’t care about the final outcome because it doesn’t really matter, but this was the first moment when suddenly something changed and it was hard”.

The Deep Disappointment
Ryder continued by comparing the feeling of disappointment to moments from action movies, where the hero manages to escape every danger, only to realize in the final moment that they’ve been hit. That, he said, was exactly how he felt after the loss:
“I felt like in an action movie scene, where the protagonist escapes everything, and then when it’s all quiet and the camera moves, they realize they’ve been shot in the gut… That’s how it felt.”
Despite the Emmy disappointment, Sam Ryder maintained a positive attitude toward himself and confidence in his goals. He even noted that these experiences helped him develop awareness of his ego and what he truly wants to achieve.
Sam Ryder – What Does the Future Hold?
Sam Ryder, whose creative song “Space Man” earned him an outstanding second-place finish at Eurovision 2022, didn’t stop there and has continued making music. Among his recent works are the single “You’re Christmas To Me”, which reached second place on the charts, and the commercially successful album “There’s Nothing But Space, Man!”.
“I think everyone has an ego, and it’s something we all need to deal with. It exists in all of us—some keep it in check, while others might lose control of it.”
Overall, it’s worth noting that Sam Ryder has continued to succeed and progress, even if not all achievements were immediate. What he accomplished with “Space Man” at Eurovision and what he’s doing now with his career only proves that losses don’t always define the pathת they allow for growth and the chance to reshape the journey.
