Eurovision 2024 star Nutsa Buzaladze responds to allegations of supporting Pro-Russian forces, accusing critics of a years-long campaign against her reputation.

Georgian Eurovision star Nutsa Buzaladze is known among Eurovision fans as an outspoken artist who is unafraid to express her views. Now, however, she finds herself at the center of a controversy that contrasts sharply with the image many fans have of her: she has been accused of supporting Pro-Russian party “Georgian Dream” and has responded with a strongly worded statement.

Buzaladze, who has previously competed on American television shows and cultivated an image as a charismatic singer with an international, Western-facing career, has recently been accused of being a “favorite of the Georgian regime.” The ruling political establishment has been associated with Euroscepticism – opposition to or skepticism toward European Union integration – and closer reliance on neighboring Russia. The controversy appears to have escalated significantly, prompting Buzaladze to issue a forceful response on Instagram:

“I am a person who has worked very hard throughout my life, and my success has come solely from hard work, dedication, and tremendous effort. I have spent my entire life representing my country faithfully, doing and wanting only what is best for my homeland. Despite this, for three years I have been experiencing a negative campaign against me, including insults such as ‘Kotsi’ (a supporter of the Georgian Dream party, used as a derogatory term). Until now, I have remained silent, but my silence is not a sign of weakness. From now on, anyone who spreads rumors about me or tries to destroy my reputation will face the law. All relevant cases will be handed over to my lawyer, and I will take them to court.”

Buzaladze added that her statement was not intended as a political declaration, but rather as an attempt to protect her reputation and artistic career. The article suggests that the attacks may be part of an organized effort targeting artists over their political views and attempting to “cancel” them.

People can agree or disagree with Buzaladze, or with any other artist, and public figures can certainly be criticized. However, there is a line between legitimate criticism and harassment or calls for a boycott. Recognizing that distinction is important, even when an artist’s views or perceived political affiliations are controversial.
