Tonight at 21:00 CET, the Maltese Eurovision national selection “MESC 2025” kicks off with its first semi-final! The event will take place at the Malta Fair and Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali. Twelve competitors will perform tonight, and the top eight songs, as voted by the audience and the judges, will advance to the grand final, scheduled for February 8, where Malta will choose its representative and song for Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.

The national selection evenings will be hosted by Valentina Rossi and Pauline Agius, former Maltese Eurovision spokespeople, and Davide Tucci, a well-known Italian actor whose mother is Maltese.

Spotlight Performances

According to streaming figures on various platforms, Kristy Spiteri stands out with a significant lead, boasting about 87,000 listens on YouTube and approximately 109,000 on Spotify. Following closely is JVF, with about 106,000 YouTube listens and 23,000 on Spotify. Victoria Sciberras ranks third with about 36,000 listens on YouTube and 33,000 on Spotify.

Among the contestants, we can see some familiar names

  • Fabrizio Faniello – represented Malta at Eurovision 2001 with his song “Another Summer Night” and reached ninth place in the final, and again in 2006 with his song “I do”, where he finished last in the final.
  • Kurt Calleja – represented Malta at Eurovision 2012 with his song “This is the night” and reached 21st place in the final.

Besides them, artists such as Nathan PsailaStefan GaleaHaley AzzopardiMartina Borg, and Mark Anthony Bartolo, who competed in the pre-selection in the past but did not achieve significant results, have returned.

The dates for the Maltese Eurovision pre-selection are as follows:

  • Semi-final 1 – Tuesday, February 4th, 2025
  • Semi-final 2 – Thursday, February 6th, 2025
  • Grand Final – Saturday, February 8th, 2025




Malta in Eurovision 2024

“Loop” is the name of the song performed by singer Sarah Bonnici, who was chosen to represent Malta after winning the Maltese national selection. Malta did not qualify for the final, finishing 16th and last in the second semi-final with 13 points.

This is the second consecutive time Malta has finished last in the semi-final stage, and the fifth time overall since joining the competition in 1971. Additionally, Malta fails to qualify for the final for the third consecutive time, a new negative record since the semi-final system began in 2004.

Eurovision 2025: This will be Malta’s 37th participation in Eurovision. Malta joined the competition in 1971 and achieved its best result in Eurovision 2002 and Eurovision 2005 after finishing second twice.
