“It’s something that hasn’t been done before”: Austria’s Eurovision 2025 performance director, Sergio Jaén, shares insights into staging JJ’s act.
One of the top contenders for Eurovision 2025 is Austria, represented by singer JJ with the song “Wasted Love”. The creative director behind his performance, Sergio Jaén, who is also staging Cyprus’s and Finland’s entries, has revealed new details about the artistic process. JJ will compete in the second semi-final on May 15th in Basel, Switzerland.
Sergio shared:
“It was a very quick process with the song. I heard it once or twice and immediately felt it. There was something I connected to right away. The initial ideas came very fast, and the production was also extremely quick. I’m so glad Teya (the songwriter) and the whole team trusted me with this. I created something very personal, full of emotion, pure feeling, focused on the song and the artist.”
This week, JJ revealed that the official staging plans have been submitted to the Swiss national broadcaster, stating:
“I’m a bit nervous because it’s something that hasn’t been done before, especially in terms of camera work. I’m really looking forward to it and hope it gets approved, if so – it’ll be amazing.”
The creative production is led by renowned director Sergio Jaén, who proved his expertise at the previous Eurovision, having staged Ireland’s 2024 entry “Doomsday Blue” performed by Bambie Thug. JJ has previously expressed gratitude for working with such a talented producer and stage director.
Austria at Eurovision 2025
“Wasted Love” is the song to be performed by JJ, representing Austria in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2025 on May 15th in Basel, Switzerland, The song was written by the singer, whose full name is Johannes Pietsch, alongside Thomas Turner and Teya, Austria’s representative at Eurovision 2023 with Salena and their song “Who The Hell Is Edgar?“. The song is performed in English.
The lyrics explore the pain and loss of unrequited or unfulfilled love. JJ describes himself as an “ocean of love,” while the object of his affection fears “drowning” in his emotions and chooses to pull away. The song conveys abandonment, depicting a struggle to hold onto a connection that ultimately leaves him adrift in emotional turmoil, unable to reclaim what was lost.
Currently, Austria ranks second in the betting odds for Eurovision 2025.
