German Eurovision composer Ralph Siegel has been placed in an induced coma in Munich following severe pneumonia.
Deep concern fills the Eurovision world as the legendary German composer and producer, Ralph Siegel, has been placed in a medically induced coma at a Munich hospital after contracting severe pneumonia. The 80-year-old composer was transferred to the intensive care unit and was intubated and sedated following a severe deterioration in his medical condition. His daughter, Giulia Siegel, shared an update on Instagram:
“The whole family is together and completely focused on our father. He is currently in an artificial coma, but is already able to breathe on his own. We look towards the coming days with optimism. We ask to avoid speculation and to respect only verified information. We will not provide further information or interviews at this stage. Thank you very much for your understanding and for protecting our privacy.”
The deterioration of his health comes after he managed particularly complex health battles in recent years. The legendary musician beat cancer no fewer than four times, after being first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007, with the disease returning with metastases and severe pain in 2010, 2023, and 2024. In addition, he suffered from polyneuropathy – a nerve disease that caused him extreme pain in his feet, balance issues, and difficulty standing and walking for long periods.
Optimism Despite Health Battles
Despite these health challenges, just this past spring, Siegel displayed peak energy and great optimism when he purchased a large restaurant on the Costa Dorada coast in Spain (about 120 kilometers south of Barcelona), right across from his local apartment. He named the venue “Meson Bahía Restaurant Musical bei Mister Eurovision, Ralf Siegel” and even arranged to have white sausages flown in from Munich. His wife, Laura, shared at the time that he was happy and relatively healthy, and Siegel himself even declared in late March:
“I am doing well right now, thank God. It is not getting any worse.”
The Legacy of Ralph

Ralph Siegel is considered one of the most influential and recognized creators in Eurovision history. Throughout his illustrious career, he sent no fewer than 24 songs to the grand stage for various countries, including Germany, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Switzerland, and San Marino. The pinnacle of his work is undoubtedly Germany’s historic victory at the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Ein bißchen Frieden” (in English: “A Little Peace”), performed by the singer Nicole. The singer and his song brought Germany its first-ever victory in the competition, and the track became an absolute Eurovision classic spanning generations.
Alongside this victory, Siegel is responsible for a long list of songs that competed and became an inseparable part of Eurovision history. Among others, he composed “Dschinghis Khan” for Germany, performed by the band Dschinghis Khan at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest, which finished in fourth place and became one of the biggest hits the contest has ever seen. A year later, at the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest, he brought Germany a second-place finish with the song “Theater“, performed by Katja Ebstein, an achievement he repeated at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the emotional song “Johnny Blue“, performed by Lena Valaitis. Eurovision fans also well remember the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest held at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem, where he reached an honorable third place with the song “Reise nach Jerusalem” (in English: “Journey to Jerusalem”) performed by the band Sürpriz.
Even in recent years, Siegel never stopped creating, staging a musical he wrote in Germany, and attempting to return to the contest stage several times by writing songs for various national selections across Europe.
