Oscar-nominated actress Maria Bakalova is finalizing details to host Eurovision 2027 in Burgas, though BNT and the EBU have yet to confirm.
Is Eurovision 2027 in Bulgaria on its way to enlisting one of the biggest names the European stage has ever known? An international Bulgarian film star, who was nominated for an Academy Award, has been selected to serve as one of the lead hosts of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. It is none other than actress Maria Bakalova. The fact that the contest will take place in her hometown of Burgas makes the casting a natural and particularly emotional full-circle moment for the hosts. According to a report by the Bulgarian media outlet “Bulgaria Dnes”, the final details regarding her participation in hosting the contest are being finalized these days.
The Fans’ Dream Becoming Reality?
Bakalova broke into international prominence in 2020 when she portrayed the character of Tutar Sagdiyev in the hit comedy “Borat 2” alongside Sacha Baron Cohen. For this role, she registered an unprecedented historical achievement by becoming the first Bulgarian actress ever nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category, alongside nominations for the Golden Globes and BAFTA, and has since continued to star in a line of international projects and films in Hollywood.
Public interest in Bakalova’s candidacy does not come in a vacuum. Back in June, the Eurovision website “esctoday” reported that the actress expressed great openness and fundamental willingness to take part in hosting the contest if it took place in Burgas. Furthermore, Bakalova herself has previously reacted positively to inquiries and suggestions from fans on social media who called for her to take the stage as the country’s official host. It is important to emphasize that as of now, Bulgarian national broadcaster BNT and the EBU have not confirmed the report.
The Countdown to Burgas Is in Full Swing
As recalled, the city of Burgas was officially announced last August as the host city of Eurovision 2027, following Bulgaria’s historic victory in Vienna. The entire competition will be held at the state-of-the-art “Arena Burgas”: the semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 13th, with the Grand Final event taking place on Saturday evening, May 15th, 2027.
EuroMix will continue to closely follow official announcements from Bulgarian national broadcaster BNT and the EBU regarding the hosts and all the details!
