SVT has officially revealed the host cities and dates for Melodifestivalen 2027 to select Sweden’s next Eurovision entry.

The 2027 Eurovision season officially kicked off on September 1st, and Swedish national broadcaster SVT is pressing ahead with preparations for its iconic national selection, Melodifestivalen. SVT officially unveiled the cities that will host the six live shows, which will feature five heats and a Grand Final.




Melodifestivalen 2027 Tour Dates

The Melodifestivalen 2027 season will officially launch on Saturday, February 6th, live on SVT. The Grand Final will take place five weeks later, on March 13th. Following the song submission deadline on September 11th, a professional jury panel will select the 30 songs competing next year, all hoping to represent Sweden at Eurovision 2027.

  • Heat 1 – February 6th – Karlstad, Löfbergs Arena

  • Heat 2 – February 13th – Gothenburg, Scandinavium

  • Heat 3 – February 20th – Malmö, Malmö Arena

  • Heat 4 – February 27th – Halmstad, Halmstad Arena

  • Heat 5 – March 6th – Norrköping, Himmelstalundshallen

  • Grand Final – March 13th – Stockholm, Strawberry Arena

Famous Hosts Returning to Present the Show

Next year’s selection will be hosted by two figures well known to Melodifestivalen fans: Oscar Zia and Björn Kjellman. Zia (29), a successful singer and presenter, returns to the hosting role after previously fronting the competition in 2021 and 2022. Beyond his presenting experience, he is also a former Melodifestivalen participant, having finished in a strong second place in the 2016 Grand Final with his hit song “Human“.

Alongside him will be actor and singer Kjellman (63), a self-proclaimed “schlager nerd” who has been closely associated with the selection for decades. Kjellman competed in the contest himself in 2006 with the ballad “Älskar du livet” (in English: “Do You Love Life”), which finished ninth in the Grand Final. Alongside his acting career, Kjellman served for many years as the official commentator and Eurovision expert for Swedish radio station Sveriges Radio. His radio involvement paused in 2021 when he began starring in commercials for supermarket chain ICA as the character “ICA-Stig” – a role he concluded earlier this year, clearing his path back to the SVT main stage.

Melodifestivalen Rules and Selection Format

Once again this year, Melodifestivalen will serve as the Swedish national selection for Eurovision. This marks the 64th time the Swedish entry will be chosen through this platform, which has selected every Swedish representative except for Sweden’s debut at Eurovision 1958, where singer Alice Babs was internally selected, and during Sweden’s absences from the contest in 1964, 1970, and 1976.

Some of the key rules continuing into this edition include SVT’s aim to have 30% of the competing entries performed primarily in Swedish, and for at least 50% of the selected entries to feature female songwriters (as sole writers or in collaboration). Furthermore, an artist performing a winning song at Melodifestivalen is not guaranteed to perform the entry at Eurovision, as this remains at SVT’s discretion. Additional details regarding the structure of Melodifestivalen 2027 will be announced in due course.

Last year’s Melodifestivalen format operated as follows:

  • Heats (Deltävlingar): The selection consisted of five heats, with six songs competing in each. The two entries receiving the most public votes in each heat qualified directly for the Grand Final.

  • Final Qualification (Finalkval): The third-place songs from all five heats earned a second chance. This stage took place as a rapid vote immediately following Heat 5, where the Swedish public selected the final two entries to complete the Grand Final lineup.

  • Grand Final (Final): In the showpiece finale, 12 songs competed for the opportunity to represent Sweden at Eurovision. The winner was decided by combining votes from the Swedish public with points awarded by international jury panels, split evenly at 50% each.



Sweden at Eurovision 2026

“My System” is the song that was performed by the singer Felicia, which represented Sweden in the Eurovision Grand Final on May 16th, in Vienna, Austria, and came in 20th place. The song was written by Felicia Eriksson herself, together with Audun Agnar, Emily Harbakk, Julie Bergan and Theresa Rex. This is the first Eurovision entry by all songwriters. The song was performed entirely in English.

Eurovision 2026: This was Sweden’s 65th appearance in the competition. Sweden joined Eurovision in 1958 and has won the contest seven times over the years. The country’s most recent victory came in 2023, when Loreen won with the song “Tattoo”.
