Swedish media have revealed the first name expected to compete in Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s national selection for Eurovision 2027, which will take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. The act is a supergroup made up of artists who have competed in Sweden’s selection several times, both together and individually, and are well known to Eurovision fans. According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the act in question is EMD, who competed as a group in Melodifestivalen 2009, where they lost to Malena Ernman. The group consists of Danny Saucedo and Eric Segersdest, both of whom have appeared in Melodifestivalen in recent years, alongside Mattias Andreasson, who also competed in the 2012 edition of the selection. He lost to Loreen, who went on to win Eurovision that same year.
EMD was active between 2007 and 2010 and has now reunited for a joint tour. The trio is expected to compete in the fifth heat of Melodifestivalen, as their schedule leaves them unavailable during the other heats. Their tour calendar reportedly has a gap between February 27th and March 19th.
Melodifestivalen will once again serve as Sweden’s Eurovision selection. This will be the 64th edition in which the Swedish song is chosen through the competition. The format has been used to select every Swedish Eurovision entry except for the country’s debut in 1958, when singer Alice Babs was selected directly, and the years Sweden did not participate in Eurovision: 1964, 1970 and 1976.
Several interesting rules are set to remain in place this year. Swedish national broadcaster SVT aims to ensure that 30% of the songs in the competition are performed primarily in Swedish. In addition, at least 50% of the selected songs must include female songwriters, either women exclusively or mixed-gender songwriting teams. An artist who performs the song selected to represent Sweden at Eurovision is not guaranteed to perform it at the contest itself; that decision remains at SVT’s discretion. - Heats (Deltävlingar): The competition consisted of five heats, each featuring six songs. In each heat, the two entries receiving the most votes from the public at home advanced directly to the grand final.
- Final Qualification Round (Finalkval): The songs that finished third in each of the five heats received another chance to qualify. This round took place as a quick vote immediately after the fifth heat, with the Swedish public selecting the final two songs to complete the lineup for the grand final.
- Grand Final (Final): Twelve songs competed for the opportunity to represent Sweden at Eurovision. The winner was determined by combining votes from the Swedish public with points awarded by international juries, with each side accounting for 50% of the result.
Will Eurovision Powerhouse Sweden Continue Its Tradition?
Sweden is widely regarded as a Eurovision powerhouse. Across its 64 participations, the country has won seven times and shares the record for the most victories with Ireland. The two countries have also produced the only two singers to win Eurovision twice: Ireland’s Johnny Logan, who won in 1980 and 1987, and Sweden’s Loreen, who won in 2012 and 2023.
Sweden has an impressive record in the competition, having finished in the top five no fewer than 28 times. Sweden at Eurovision 2026
“My System” is the song that was performed by the singer Felicia, which represented Sweden in the Eurovision Grand Final on May 16th, in Vienna, Austria, and came in 20th place.
