The EBU and Daniel Žižka react to Czechia’s Eurovision 2027 withdrawal, citing budget cuts and expressing hope for the country’s return.
Earlier this week, Czechia withdrew from Eurovision 2027 due to budget cuts. Shortly afterwards, the Czech national broadcaster ČT shared a detailed and emotional farewell post on its Instagram page. Following the disappointing news, the EBU issued an official statement responding to the withdrawal.
In its statement, the EBU addressed ČT’s decision to withdraw from Eurovision 2027, which will take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, confirming the situation: Czechia will not participate in the contest due to extensive budget cuts.
Eurovision Director Martin Green expressed the EBU’s regret over the decision while acknowledging the difficult circumstances facing the Czech national broadcaster.
“We are sorry that the broadcaster will be unable to participate in Eurovision 2027 due to the financial pressures it is facing. We fully understand that broadcasters are having to make difficult choices, and we recognise the significant challenges facing many of our members.”
Financial Pressures Affecting Public Service Broadcasters
Green went on to address the considerable financial pressures facing public service media organisations.
“The decision reflects the wider financial pressures on public service broadcasters. Across our membership, broadcasters are operating with constrained budgets and significant cuts, while costs are rising and pressures are mounting. The Eurovision Song Contest is one part of the bigger picture, and every broadcaster has to decide what its priorities are.”
Green also emphasised his continued commitment to working closely with EBU members to support public service media organisations.
Czechia’s Eurovision 2026 Representative Daniel Žižka Reacts
Daniel Žižka, who represented Czechia at Eurovision 2026, reflected on his experience at the contest in an emotional Instagram post, highlighting the positive experience and the team that supported him throughout the journey.
“What can I say? It was a great honour to go through this experience. Not only to be selected, but also to have the best team I could have possibly asked for by my side.”
Žižka described the professional opportunities and valuable experience he gained through Eurovision, while expressing concern for Czech artists who are waiting for their chance to perform on the contest’s international stage.
“Eurovision opened many doors for me and gave me so much valuable experience. It put me on the map, and it saddens me that all the talented artists from Czechia who deserve to stand on that stage will not get the opportunity to do so in 2027. Because Czechia deserves to be part of the conversation.”

Hope for a Eurovision Return
The EBU hopes that the Czech national broadcaster ČT will return to the competition in the future, when circumstances allow. “They will always be welcome,” Green concluded.
Žižka also expressed hope for Czechia’s eventual return, while thanking the Eurovision community for allowing him to be part of it.
“Despite everything, I am full of hope that we will return to Eurovision soon. I am grateful to have been part of the Eurovision family.”
For now, Eurovision fans can only share that hope and wish for the financial pressures facing Czechia’s public broadcaster to ease, allowing the country to return to the contest – perhaps as early as 2028.
