Miriana Conte, Malta’s Eurovision 2025 representative, continues to deliver iconic performances at pre-parties, winning over audiences and positioning herself as a standout act for the upcoming contest. Opinion column.
The Eurovision 2025 pre-parties concluded last night with the PrePartyES event in Madrid. Among many impressive performances, Miriana Conte, Malta’s Eurovision 2025 representative, was the queen of the pre-parties (in my opinion), consistently stealing the show time after time.
Historically, Malta has not excelled in the public vote at Eurovision. However, I am convinced this year will be different. From the outset, Miriana tailored her performances to each host country, incorporated other contestants into her acts, and wore costumes designed for local audiences. This combination made her go viral, astonishing the crowds who sang along to her songs.
Viral Moments and Creative Staging Across Europe
At the Amsterdam pre-party, Eurovision in Concert, Conte began her set with a snippet of “Europapa” by Joost Klein, last year’s Dutch representative who was disqualified just before the Grand Final. She started her performance inside a giant Dutch stroopwafel, shedding it at the song’s start.
In London, the singer wore a white pillow and blanket, which she removed to reveal an iconic faux fur outfit in blue, red, and white—the colors of the UK flag. Miriana recreated her national final’s signature jump onto physio balls, but instead of her Maltese dancers, she was joined on stage by four other Eurovision representatives: Go-Jo from Australia, Sissal from Denmark, Marko Bošnjak from Croatia, and JJ from Austria. This time, she opened her act with “Wannabe” by the British group Spice Girls.
The British audience supported Miriana throughout, despite the controversy earlier this year when the EBU forced her to change her song title from “Kant” (meaning “Singing” in Maltese) to something else, as the word is considered an offensive term in English. This led to the Eurovision version of her song, “Serving.” The local crowd even shouted the original lyrics with her.
Madrid’s Grand Finale and Looking Ahead to Basel
At last night’s PrePartyES in Madrid, Miriana began her act completely covered in white fabric, with the Spanish Eurovision 2024 song “Zorra” by Nebulossa playing in the background. At the start, she was hidden by Sissal (Denmark), JJ (Austria), and Kyle Alessandro (Norway), who then removed the fabric to reveal her red bodysuit with a yellow corset—the colors of Spain’s flag. At the end, members of KAJ, Sweden’s 2025 representatives, joined her for a jump on the physio balls.
To sum up, while Miriana may not win Eurovision 2025 or the public vote, her iconic and viral performances will undoubtedly boost her chances. Lots of people present at her shows reported that their affection for her song grew after seeing her live. Will she reference Switzerland in her Eurovision performance in Basel? Will the audience shout the original lyrics that were banned? We’ll find out this May!
Malta in Eurovision 2025
“Serving” is the title of the song to be performed by Miriana Conte, who will represent Malta in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2025 on May 15 in Basel, Switzerland. The song was co-written by the singer alongside Benjamin Schmid, Matthew Mercieca, and Sarah Evelyn Fullerton. Schmid has previously written numerous entries for Malta’s national Eurovision selections and co-authored the winning song of Junior Eurovision 2015, “Not My Soul.” Mercieca contributed to Malta’s Eurovision entries in 2015 and 2018. This marks Schmid and Fullerton’s first Eurovision entry and Mercieca’s third. The song is performed in English.
The song advocates for freedom of expression and breaking societal constraints, emphasizing independence and female empowerment. It begins with an invitation to reveal an intimate, perhaps provocative, secret and transitions into describing a stifling environment that suppresses individuality. The chorus serves as a call to action and presence, expressing the protagonist’s ability to influence reality and encouraging others to shed inhibitions and follow her rhythm. The song concludes with a reinforcement of its message to live and express oneself freely.
Currently, Malta is ranked 12th on the betting odds ahead of Eurovision 2025.
