With over 47 million views, Klein recently surpassed “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence, the winner of Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Where did Anouk and Claude land?

Disqualified but in the lead: The song “Europapa” by Joost Klein, who represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2024, has crossed 47 million views on the Eurovision’s official YouTube channel. It now surpasses the grand final performance of “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence, the 2019 Eurovision winner, by nearly 250,000 views.

Klein is mainly remembered for being disqualified by the EBU after he attacked a Swedish production assistant. Ironically, his disqualification produced a “Streisand effect”, propelling the song to massive popularity across Europe. “Europapa” soared to the top of charts in Belgium, Croatia, Austria, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and even made its way onto the prestigious United States’ Billboard chart.

Understanding the “Streisand Effect”

The Streisand effect describes a media phenomenon where attempts to suppress information unintentionally amplify public interest in it. The term derives from singer and actress Barbara Streisand, who in 2003 unsuccessfully attempted to prevent publication of aerial photos of her Malibu estate. Before the lawsuit, only six people had downloaded the photo; after the lawsuit, it garnered nearly half a million views.

Eurovision songs can benefit as well: the controversy surrounding Klein’s conduct, combined with the EBU’s unprecedented disqualification after he had already reached the final, brought unprecedented attention. Thus, Klein ultimately benefited from the sanctions imposed upon him.

How Did Anouk and Claude Fare?

Beyond Klein and Laurence, only one other Dutch Eurovision performance has exceeded 10 million views on the official channel: “Calm After The Storm” by The Common Linnets, with their semi-final performance reaching over 13 million views. The song’s final performance ranks eighth with approximately 2.3 million views.

Anouk, one of the Netherlands’ most famous singers who achieved international recognition with her 1997 hit “Nobody’s Wife”, reached sixth place with “Birds” from Eurovision 2013, nearly 2.8 million views. Claude, the country’s 2025 representative, saw his “Ces’t La Vie” reach seventh place with almost 2.5 million views.

Netherlands at Eurovision 2025

“C’est La Vie” is the title of the song performed by Claude, who represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2025. The Netherlands qualified for the Grand Final after placing third in the first semi-final with 121 points. In the Grand Final, the Netherlands finished in 12th place with 175 points, with the jury awarding the country fifth place, but the public at home ranking it only 15th.

This year, the Netherlands participated in the Grand Final after two years of missing out. In 2023, Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper failed to qualify from the semi-final, while in 2024, Joost Klein was disqualified after the semi-final due to a violent incident involving the competition’s production team.

Eurovision 2025: This was the Netherlands’ 65th participation in Eurovision. The Netherlands joined the competition in 1956, was one of the seven founding countries, and has won it five times over the years. The Netherlands’ last victory was at Eurovision 2019 with the song “Arcade” performed by singer Duncan Laurence.
