Mikko Silvennoinen replaces Anssi Autio as the new head producer for Finland’s UMK. Will he lead Finland to a Second Eurovision victory?

Mikko Silvennoinen, known to Finnish people and many Eurovision fans as the voice of Eurovision commentary and broadcasting in Finland, has just been appointed as the new head producer of the Finnish national selection, UMK. He steps in following the departure of legendary producer Anssi Autio after 15 consecutive years of producing the beloved selection. The dramatic announcement regarding the sudden departure arrived just weeks after the Eurovision 2026 final, and it is hard not to assume that the timing is directly related to the disappointing result of Finland in Vienna – finishing only in sixth place after many were convinced they were about to win the coveted contest.

A New Chapter for UMK

Silvennoinen is taking the reins and will produce Finland’s successful national selection. The commentator is a very well-known and loved figure throughout Finland, having served as the official commentator on behalf of the Finnish national broadcaster, YLE. He has continuously commented on the Finnish national selection and the Eurovision Song Contest itself since 2016. Silvennoinen is opening a new and particularly intriguing chapter in his career by taking a step forward to produce the highly favored national selection from now on.

Finnish people and Eurovision fans are waiting in great anticipation, hoping that he will manage to maintain the high-quality standard of the Finnish national selection seen over the last decade. He is stepping into the large shoes of Autio, who has held the coveted position since the founding of the UMK format back in 2011.

Shaping Finland’s Artistic Direction

As part of the new role, Silvennoinen will be responsible for overseeing and managing the entire production from A to Z – starting from the selection phase of the competing artists and songs, all the way to the artistic and stage management of the shows themselves. This key role will grant him tremendous influence over the artistic direction and the way Finland will present itself on the Eurovision stage in the coming years.

While the news of his promotion greatly excites fans of the Finnish selection, many are now wondering what will happen to his role as a commentator, which he has executed with great success for over a decade. Silvennoinen addressed this issue himself and stated that, as of now, it is not yet known whether he will continue to commentate on UMK and Eurovision broadcasts alongside his demanding role as head producer of the selection. A final decision is expected to be made this coming autumn, closer to the exciting opening of the 2027 Eurovision national selection season.

Building on Recent Successes

The rich experience of the new producer, together with his deep understanding of the Eurovision Song Contest as an avid fan and media professional involved in the contest, is expected to bring valuable insights and a fresh spirit to the production of the Finnish selection. This might help Finland continue its impressive success in the contest since 2021 with the rock band Blind Channel and their song “Dark Side“, which earned them sixth place after many years without notable success. Since then, Finland has recorded an impressive streak of successes in the contest, consistently qualifying for the Grand Final and achieving particularly impressive results, including Käärijä with the massive hit “Cha Cha Cha” in 2023, which earned the country a highly respectable second place.

What do you think about the new appointment in Finland? Will Mikko keep Finland riding the wave and perhaps bring them their second victory in history? Or might this discussed change only do bad for Finland and return it to its dark era in the contest? Let us know in the comments!
