Finland national broadcaster YLE announced that UMK executive producer Anssi Autio will step down following the country’s sixth-place finish at Eurovision 2026.

Drama has struck the Finnish Eurovision world as Anssi Autio, the legendary executive producer behind UMK, Finland’s national selection tournament, announced he is leaving his position after 15 consecutive years. The dramatic announcement comes just a few weeks after the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 grand final, making it difficult not to assume the timing is directly connected to the disappointing result of the nation in Vienna.

A Summit Meeting That Ended in Disappointment

Finland entered the recent Eurovision Song Contest held in Vienna with sky-high expectations. The duo Linda Lampenius & Pete Parkkonen were considered clear favorites to win and even clinched first place in major fan polls with their song “Liekinheitin” (in English: “Flamethrower”).

Despite the massive buzz and hopes of replicating the past achievements of the country, the duo finished in only sixth place in the grand final. For the Finnish delegation, which had been tipped as a potential host for the next contest in Helsinki, this result was received with heavy disappointment. Although the national broadcaster did not state an official reason for the departure, the consensus among fans is that the relatively low placement of the Finnish favorite served as the primary trigger for the conclusion of Autio’s tenure.

The Man Who Turned Finland Into a Pop Empire

Autio was involved in establishing the UMK format back in 2011, aiming to refresh the outdated selection method of the Finnish national broadcaster YLE. Under his leadership, UMK transformed from a modest national selection into one of the most-watched and successful entertainment broadcasts in Finland, becoming the central hit factory for the local music industry and winning prestigious national television awards.

During his rich career, Autio was signed to an unprecedented streak of successes for Finland at Eurovision, including the sixth-place finish by Blind Channel at Eurovision 2021 and the historic second-place finish by Käärijä at Eurovision 2023, which famously included winning the public vote.

YLE hastened to thank Autio for his immense contribution, noting that he leaves behind a magnificent legacy and a strong, stable competition. It has not yet been published who will replace him in the coveted role, but it is clear to all that the next producer will have exceptionally large shoes to fill, with the clear goal being to return Finland to the top and repair the impression left by the recent contest.

He has attended five contests and has found something to appreciate in almost every possible musical genre — from the sugary pop entries that finish last in the semi-finals to the quirky avant-garde pieces that even the competition’s juries struggled to connect with. He usually prefers original languages and songs with depth over Swedish-produced English clones — though he doesn’t promise to stick to that rule.
