More than five decades after representing the United Kingdom: Cliff Richard’s “Devil Woman” is set to feature in GTA 6.
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), possibly the most anticipated video game in history, will have a background track from none other than British Eurovision legend Cliff Richard, with a bit of a twist. Richard represented the United Kingdom twice at Eurovision, finishing second in 1968 with “Congratulations” and third in 1973 with “Power to All Our Friends.” His appearance in the GTA universe is an unexpected crossover, introducing the Eurovision icon to an audience very different from the one typically associated with the contest.
Many in the Eurovision fandom know Cliff Richard mostly for his runner-up entry “Congratulations” in 1968, which lost to assiel of Spain’s “La la la” and later became the subject of long-running allegations that the Franco regime had sought to influence the contest’s outcome. He’s also known for finishing 3rd five years later with the song “Power to All Our Friends”.
Now, Cliff Richard’s music is suddenly getting a boost in publicity BUT not through either of his Eurovision entries. So, when their recent 26-minute gameplay showcase premiered, fans were quick to note that a song by Cliff Richard was featured during the promo and will be used in the actual game: “Devil Woman”. “Devil Woman” tells a story of a man seeking help that comes across a fortune teller who, instead of helping him, places a curse on him. The song ends with the narrator urging the man to escape. It is pop rock and glam rock, has an ominous feel and a dark edge throughout, and is quite the earworm
Rockstar Games, which created GTA and other very famous series, tends to put a lot of thought and intention when choosing background music for their games. Fans pointed out that “Devil Woman” fits pretty nicely in the world of criminal anarchy in GTA with its themes of temptation, danger and mystery. They theorize that the track may even be tied to the chaotic dynamic of the two protagonists of GTA 6-Jason and Lucia.
Eurovision fans, especially the British ones, can attest to Cliff Richard’s wholesome and familyfriendly discography of pop-rock songs and ballads, highlighting the contrast in genre and mood between his usual work and “Devil Woman”. Truthfully, this song was not written by Richard but rather by English singer-songwriters Terry Britten and Christine Authors. In fact, the Christian singer even changed some of the lyrics for the final recording to emphasize the message of not falling prey to supernatural temptation, as he originally feared that listeners would potentially view the song as an endorsement and celebration of the occult.
Ironically, across the pond in the USA, “Devil Woman” is the song that Cliff Richard is best known for, even soaring to number 6 on America’s Billboard Hot 100. It’s always fascinating when the Eurovision world collides into a different one, and this is no exception. Bringing Cliff Richard and GTA VI is quite the feat, and here we are, with Eurovision yet again making its rounds in some of the more unexpected realms.
