The list of potential contestants for Sweden’s Eurovision 2027 selection continues to grow. Four new names have now joined the lineup – who are they, and what will they bring to the national selection stage?
Swedish media published four additional names for Melodifestivalen, which will serve as the Swedish selection process for Eurovision 2027 to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria. The new list includes a hip-hop star, a leading theatre star, and an energetic rock quartet making the big leap straight to the forefront of the stage, alongside an artist who has already gained experience on the big stage and arrives ready for a second attempt.
Imenella
38-year-old Imenella, who specializes mainly in hip-hop, will compete in Melodifestivalen for the first time this year. She is one of the biggest hip-hop stars in Sweden, with a long resume full of awards and honors. In addition, she made her acting debut about two years ago.
Joanné Nugas
Joanné Nugas, a 31-year-old singer and actress, is a successful musical theatre star expected to make her debut on the Melodifestivalen stage. Nugas is especially known for voicing the character of Ariel in Swedish in the live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” released in 2023. The professional acclaim she has earned in theatre and music paved her way to securing the coveted ticket to the competition.
Envyyou
Envyyou is a young alternative rock band from Malmö consisting of four members. The band achieved modest success with their debut single “Stick around”, released in 2020. Their participation in the competition marks a significant stepping stone in their career, with SVT pleased to continue the tradition and give representation to the rock genre, which enjoys great popularity and a loyal fanbase in Sweden.
Nomi Tales
Nomi Tales, stage name of 29-year-old Nomi Bontegard, is a Swedish singer returning to the competition for a second attempt. She made her Melodifestivalen debut in 2025 with the song “Funniest thing”, but was eliminated in the preliminary heats stage. Now, she returns to the big stage with a new song aiming to qualify for the Grand Final.

This year as well, Melodifestivalen will serve as the Swedish national selection for Eurovision. This marks the 64th year in which the Swedish entry is selected through this platform, through which all of Sweden’s Eurovision representatives were chosen except for its debut participation in Eurovision 1958, when singer Alice Babs was selected internally, and excluding Sweden’s absences from the contest in 1964, 1970, and 1976.
Some of the interesting rules of the competition continuing this year include SVT’s target for 30% of the songs in the competition to be performed primarily in Swedish, and for at least 50% of the selected entries to feature female songwriters (women only, or a combination of men and women). Additionally, an artist performing a song in Melodifestivalen that is chosen to represent Sweden at Eurovision is not guaranteed to perform the song at Eurovision itself, as this remains at SVT’s discretion.
Melodifestivalen Format Last Year
- Preliminary Heats (Deltävlingar): The competition consisted of five heats, with six songs competing in each. From each heat, the two songs that received the most votes from the home audience qualified directly to the Grand Final.
- Second Chance Stage (Finalkval): The songs that finished in third place in each of the five heats received another opportunity. This stage took place as a flash vote immediately following the fifth heat, from which the Swedish public selected the final two songs to complete the line-up for the final.
- The Grand Final (Final): In the climax of the competition, 12 songs competed for the ticket to Eurovision. The winner was determined by combining the votes of the Swedish public at home with points awarded by international juries, split equally 50-50 between both sides.
Will the Eurovision Powerhouse Continue Its Tradition?
Sweden is considered a Eurovision powerhouse, having won seven times across its 64 appearances and sharing the title of most victories with Ireland. These two nations have also produced the only two artists to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice: the first was Johnny Logan from Ireland, who won Eurovision 1980 and Eurovision 1987, and the second was Loreen from Sweden, who won Eurovision 2012 and Eurovision 2023.
Sweden is regarded as a highly successful nation in the contest, having reached the top five no fewer than 28 times – finishing in first place seven times, second place once, third place six times, fourth place four times, and fifth place ten times. Sweden reached places 6 through 10 on 17 additional occasions.
Eurovision 2027: This will be Sweden’s 65th participation in Eurovision. Sweden joined the competition in 1958, and has won it seven times over the years. Sweden’s last victory was in Eurovision 2023 with the song “Tattoo” performed by the singer Loreen.
