The German Head of Delegation describes the atmosphere during Eurovision 2024 as nothing less than disturbing and shocking, contradicting the competition’s core values that aim to unite through music.
In a candid interview, Alexandra Wolfslast, the German head of delegation, shed light on the unsettling dynamics at Eurovision 2024, where political tensions overshadowed the music. “We really felt it during the preparations for the Grand Final. It was really shocking to me,” she stated, reflecting on the atmosphere that permeated the event.”
Wolfslast emphasized the impact of the ongoing geopolitical conflicts, particularly following Israel’s participation amid the backdrop of the terror organisation Hamas’s conflict. “Eurovision is always political, even if we say it isn’t,” she noted, highlighting a significant shift in the contest’s traditionally celebratory spirit. This year, she observed a stark contrast in artists’ behavior compared to previous editions. “Normally when artists come to the green room, everybody is applauding them, and all of a sudden, some artists are not applauding other artists – I thought that was really disturbing,” she remarked.
The German head of delegation emphasized that the atmosphere in the final, following all the booing heard during the broadcast, caused an unpleasant feeling that doesn’t align with the competition’s values. She expressed her hope for future improvements, stating, “I really hope we do whatever we can to make sure this does not happen again. This harmed the brand in my opinion.”

Isaak, Germany’s representative, also spoke out against calls for boycotting Israel in May, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of political pressures.
Responsible for the toxic atmosphere – the artists themselves?
The German HoD is not the only one who spoke out against the behavior of some Eurovision artists and placed, at least to some extent, the blame for the toxic atmosphere in the competition on them. We recently heard similar things in an interview with Croatia’s representative, the public vote winner who came second in the competition, Baby Lasagna, who described how the artists were waiting to go up for the flag parade in one of the final performances and how Ireland’s representative shouted, according to him, “like an angry dog,” the moment she saw that one of the Israeli delegation members was filming her, along with the other artists, despite many others filming at the same time without it bothering her.
