On November 16, the Junior Eurovision 2024 will take place in Madrid, Spain, under the slogan “Let’s Bloom.” All 17 countries participating in the 22nd Junior Eurovision have announced their young representatives and the songs they will compete with next month in Madrid. The winner will succeed France, the reigning champion of 2023, who won the competition for the second consecutive time. Spain will host the contest as the runner-up of Junior Eurovision 2023 held in Nice after France transferred the hosting rights.

A Brief History and Current Landscape of Junior Eurovision

Junior Eurovision is a similar version of the Eurovision Song Contest for children aged 9-14. The competition, which began in Copenhagen in 2003, has seen France and Georgia emerge as the record holders with 3 victories each. France will undoubtedly be remembered as the undisputed power of the 2020s in Junior Eurovision, having won all Junior competitions in the last decade except for 2021, which was held in its capital Paris. Among the 17 countries participating in this year’s Junior Eurovision, Cyprus and San Marino are returning to compete after several years of absence.

The contest will be held at the Caja Mágica venue in Madrid at 18:00 CET. The hosts of the competition are Marc Clotet, Spain’s representative in Junior Eurovision 2019 Melani García, and Spain’s representative in Eurovision 2014 Ruth Lorenzo. Listen to all the songs of Junior Eurovision 2024!

Voting System and What to Expect from the Show

The voting system in Junior Eurovision differs slightly from the adult competition. Like Eurovision, the Junior contest’s voting is split between 50% jury votes from participating countries and 50% public votes. However, the public voting process is unique:

  • Voting opens the day before the live broadcast, on November 15, on the Junior Eurovision website.
  • Voters must watch short clips of the stage performances before voting.
  • Voting closes shortly before the show on November 16 and reopens after all 17 songs have been performed.
  • After a voting window dedicated to guest performances, voting closes, and the winner is determined by combining jury and public votes.
  • Unlike Eurovision, in Junior Eurovision, people can vote for their own country if it’s participating.

The Spanish national broadcaster RTVE, organizing this year’s Junior Eurovision in Madrid, has not yet announced the guest performances or “Interval Acts” that will appear during the show. Details about the opening ceremony, traditionally held at the beginning of the rehearsal week in a famous location in the host city (similar to the Turquoise Carpet ceremony of the regular Eurovision), are also yet to be revealed.
