German Head of Delegation Tina Sikorski outlines plans for Eurovision 2027, focusing on diverse music genres and stronger national Final acts

Almost two weeks have passed since the Eurovision 2026 grand final took place in Vienna, Austria, and Germany is already looking ahead to next year. Following the disappointing result of the country’s performer, Sarah Engels, the German Head of Delegation, Tina Sikorski, has reacted for the first time to the placement and shared the initial preparations for the upcoming edition, where the explicit objective is achieving a better result in the competition.

Preparations for 2027 – The Ambition for a Higher Placement

In a post published on LinkedIn, Sikorski wrote: “Eurovision 2026 – what a crazy journey it has been! Thank you, Sarah, for a fantastic performance and relentless effort on stage and behind the scenes. And thank you to the incredible team at the national broadcaster SWR.”

Reflecting on the final scoreboard, she added: “Even though we hoped for a better result for Sarah, it is impossible to ignore many bright spots. Her performances were stable and strong, she received immense appreciation from the home audience in Germany, and the feedback in Vienna was wonderful. Furthermore, the song entered the top 10 of the most-streamed Eurovision 2026 songs on Spotify.”

While statements celebrating these achievements are welcome, expectations for an improvement remain unchanged. Later in her post, Sikorski detailed the new direction for the country: “Looking towards 2027, we want to optimize our formats and workflows to deliver excellent content that reaches more people, and of course – to aim for a much higher placement in the grand final. To achieve this, we will continue to work in close and trusting cooperation with the music industry, and we will offer stable and reliable platforms for artists.”

Looking Beyond Mainstream Pop

“Our goal for selecting the artist and song for Eurovision 2027 is to attract more prominent and high-quality acts to the German national selection, to encourage a wider stylistic diversity beyond regular mainstream pop, and to incorporate songs that are ‘a bit different’ and truly stand out on stage.”

This past April, Sikorski stated that the national broadcaster would continue using a public national selection for the upcoming year, though she did not completely rule out the possibility of an internal selection. At this stage, it remains unclear what the national final format will look like or how Germany will attempt to attract high-profile names ahead of the contest in Bulgaria. However, with it being crystal clear to everyone involved that the low placement from this year is simply not enough, expectations are soaring.
