The Greek national broadcaster ERT has officially confirmed Greece will participate in Eurovision 2027, utilizing third edition for “Sing for Greece”.
Greece will participate in Eurovision 2027, as officially confirmed in an interview by the communications director of the Greek national broadcaster ERT. Greece is the fifth country to confirm its participation in Eurovision 2027, following Germany, North Macedonia, San Marino, and the host country – Bulgaria.
In an interview given by ERT Corporate Communications Director Konstantinos Tsolakis to the Polish website escspot.pl, he confirmed that Greece will indeed participate in Eurovision 2027 and will select its entry for the third consecutive time through “Sing for Greece”. He stated:
“Of course we will take part (in Eurovision 2027), and our representative will be selected through the extremely successful ‘Sing for Greece’ selection process, which we have been running for two years”.
Further details regarding the selection process will be revealed later on.
Third Time’s a Charm?
The Greek national final “Sing for Greece” is considered a significant springboard for Greece. The new national final, which selected the Greek entries for the past two years, brought high achievements to the country. Klavdia represented Greece at Eurovision 2025 with the song “Asteromata” (in English: “Starry Eyes”) and finished in sixth place, and a year later, Akylas and the song “Ferto” (in English: “Bring It”) also managed to bring Greece to tenth place – will Greece manage to bring another hit to the upcoming contest? If we rely on the achievements of the songs chosen so far – it seems that Greece is aiming high and planning to stay strongly in the picture.
Greece in Eurovision: From Immense Difficulties to a Powerhouse of Achievements
Greece has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 46 times, winning once, being absent six times, and one additional time where its participation did not materialize was at Eurovision 2020, when the participation of Stefania Liberakakis and her song “Superg!rl” was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Greece was considered a highly struggling country at the beginning of its journey in the contest. Greece began participating in Eurovision 1974, where the representative Marinella with the song “Krasi, Thalassa, Ke t’Agori Mou” (in English: “Wine, Sea, and My Boyfriend”) reached 11th place. Its temporary success began in 1977 when it reached fifth place with the song “Mathema Solfege” (in English: “Solfeggio Lesson”).
In the 1980s, Greece recorded three absences. In 1982, it announced its withdrawal after its song was perceived as a cover version of an existing song. In 1984, it announced its withdrawal again, and in 1986, it withdrew due to a national holiday. The 1990s also did not smile upon Greece, as it finished in the top five only in 1992.
Two additional absences were recorded for Greece in 1999 and 2000, when in 1999 it was relegated due to a low average of achievements and in the following year did not return for financial reasons. The year 2001 was the revolution year for Greece in the contest, when the band Antique and lead vocalist Helena Paparizou brought the country to third place for the first time with the song “Die for You“, an achievement that Sakis Rouvas replicated in 2004. A year later, Paparizou brought Greece’s first victory, and it seemed that Greece continued from there to bring additional strong achievements.
It seems that only these days, Greece is returning to form and bringing high achievements. At Eurovision 2025, Klavdia brought sixth place with the song “Asteromata“, and Akylas reached tenth place in Vienna with the song “Ferto“.
Greece won Eurovision once, at Eurovision 2005, and reached the top five five additional times: twice in third place, at Eurovision 2001 and Eurovision 2004, and twice in fifth place, at Eurovision 1977 and Eurovision 1992. Greece even placed 16 additional times in the Top 10, including twice in sixth place, three times in seventh place, five additional times in eighth place, three times in ninth place, and three times in tenth place, including this year.
Eurovision 2027: This will be Greece’s 47th participation in Eurovision. Greece joined the competition in 1974 and achieved its best result in Eurovision 2005 when singer Helena Paparizou won first place with the song “My Number One”.
