BHRT and RTVA have officially confirmed that Bosnia & Herzegovina and Andorra will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Bulgaria.

Preparations for the Eurovision 2027 song contest are already gathering momentum, and alongside the formulation of the list of countries that will take the stage, less fortunate news for fans of the competition is also arriving. While many national broadcasters are rushing to express interest in participating in the contest, two nations that have been absent from the competition for a long time have officially confirmed that they will continue to be absent from the Eurovision stage next year as well – Bosnia & Herzegovina and Andorra.

Bosnia & Herzegovina Will Be Absent from Eurovision 2027

The Bosnian national broadcaster, BHRT, has officially confirmed that Bosnia & Herzegovina will not participate in Eurovision 2027. With this decision, the Balkan country joins the list of nations that have confirmed their absence from the competition to be held next year in Bulgaria. The reason for the prolonged absence is ongoing financial hurdles faced by BHRT, as the economic situation in the country remains unchanged compared to recent years.

Furthermore, BHRT is still under sanctions from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) due to outstanding debts, and its overall financial situation remains unstable. A return of Bosnia & Herzegovina to the Eurovision Song Contest will only be possible after settling the local national broadcaster’s financial debts to the EBU, which last year stood at approximately 10 million euros, the core reason the country was forced to withdraw from the competition after Eurovision 2016.

The last time Bosnia & Herzegovina took part in Eurovision was a decade ago, on the stage of Stockholm in 2016. With this decision, the country will mark its 11th consecutive year outside the competition, to the dismay of many Eurovision fans. As a reminder, Bosnia & Herzegovina made its debut in 1993, and its peak achievement in the contest was recorded in 2006, when the band Hari Mata Hari captured third place in the Grand Final in Athens with the emotional song “Lejla“.

Andorra: The Principality from the Pyrenees Will Continue to Watch Eurovision from Home

Another country that has confirmed it will not return to the competition in 2027 is Andorra. The Andorran national broadcaster, RTVA, has confirmed that the country will not compete in the upcoming Eurovision in Bulgaria. Andorra was last seen on the Eurovision stage back in 2009, and following financial difficulties, it withdrew from the competition in 2010 and has not returned since.

RTVA put an end to return scenarios, clarifying that despite discussions that took place on the matter recently, the country does not intend to return to Eurovision. A particularly interesting fact is that this decision comes at a time when the budget of the state national broadcaster has significantly increased. According to information, the funding of RTVA reached 6.2 million euros, which raised expectations that the path might be cleared for a renewed participation in the contest.

However, the management of RTVA chose to channel the available funds to other needs – mainly operational and personnel matters, instead of investing in the costs required for a Eurovision presence. At the same time, it was stated on behalf of the national broadcaster that Eurovision is no longer among the priorities of its current strategy.

Andorra, the tiny principality nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains between Spain and France, made its debut at Eurovision 2004 in Istanbul. During its years in the contest, it managed to participate only 6 times and never succeeded in qualifying for the Grand Final stage. Despite this, its participation is fondly remembered for bringing the Catalan language to the forefront, as three of its entries were performed entirely in Catalan and three others were combined with English.

The last representative of the country was Susanne Georgi, who performed the song “La Teva Decisió” in 2009. Fans of the contest will have to continue hoping that the small principality finds the financial way to return to the competition in the foreseeable future. Georgi still supports the idea of a Eurovision comeback, and has even searched for private sponsors who could cover the participation expenses. Despite this, the official stance of the national broadcaster remains unchanged.

Eurovision 2027 will take place for the first time in its history in Bulgaria, following the country’s victory in Eurovision 2026 with the song “Bangaranga” performed by the singer Dara.
