The moment Eurovision fans have been waiting for has arrived: Canada will make its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, and today (Monday), the official process to select the artist who will fly the Canadian flag in May 2027 officially opened. Canadian national broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada has published application details outlining how the nation’s inaugural participant will be chosen for the contest taking place in Burgas, Bulgaria.

Candidate Criteria and Stage Experience Requirements
The selection process is open to Canadian artists who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, at least 18 years old by May 1st, 2027, and eligible for international travel. Furthermore, the requirements published by CBC/Radio-Canada indicate that the national broadcaster is specifically targeting established music industry professionals rather than emerging newcomers.
This emphasis is particularly clear in the requirement for an “established career” and proven performance experience before large audiences or on television. Alongside live vocal capabilities, Canada is seeking an artist with a distinct artistic identity, charisma, and commanding stage presence. In short, the goal is to enter their debut contest with a well-defined act capable of standing out on the global stage.
The selected act must be available for rehearsals and both domestic and international travel, as well as handling extensive media coverage surrounding the competition. A strong social media presence and familiarity with the European music market are not mandatory, though both would serve as distinct advantages.
Song Rules and Language Guidelines
A key element of the process is that song submission is not required during the initial application. Canada will first select its representative, and work on the entry itself will commence only after the artist has been chosen. CBC/Radio-Canada has also requested that applicants with existing songs refrain from releasing or promoting them during the selection period.
It has already been confirmed that the Canadian song will feature lyrics in English, French, or a combination of both official languages, with the potential to include additional languages. Once the artist is selected, their language proficiency will be taken into account during the songwriting process.
Selection Timeline and Voting Format
After registration closes, national broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada will review all applications and select the final candidates, who are expected to be announced in autumn. In the subsequent phase, the Canadian public will vote alongside a jury of local music industry experts to choose the winner.
Applications opened today, August 31st at 09:00 PT, and will close on September 9th at 23:59 PT. This opens the search for the artist who will represent Canada at Eurovision, with their identity expected to be revealed by the end of 2026.
However, key structural details regarding the voting mechanics remain unannounced. CBC/Radio-Canada has not yet disclosed how the voting ratio between the public and the jury will be weighted, nor whether the final selection will be broadcast as a dedicated television show.
