History has been made: Canada’s CBC has officially confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2027!

A new country in the Eurovision Song Contest: 12 years after Australia opened the door, Canada’s national broadcaster CBC has officially confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 to be held in Bulgaria next May!

Canada is the 12th country to confirm its participation in Eurovision 2027, following Denmark, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, LuxembourgNorth Macedonia, NorwaySan Marino, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the host country – Bulgaria.

Today marks Canada Day, Canada’s national holiday, comparable to Israel’s Independence Day. On the occasion, the European Broadcasting Union officially announced Canada’s participation in the next Eurovision Song Contest in a historic decision that formally opens the competition to full EBU member countries located outside Europe.

Marie-Philippe Bouchard, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, said: “On this Canada Day, as we celebrate with Canadians across the country and around the world the richness and diversity of Canadian culture, we’re so excited to confirm that we’re bringing the world’s largest live music event to Canadians.

“Our participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, starting next year in Bulgaria, will allow Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the most storied music stages in the world. It will also allow fans in Canada to continue watching and voting in the Song Contest, as they have done for years – with the added thrill of seeing their own country represented on the Eurovision stage.”

According to an interview with Martin Green, the Eurovision Song Contest Director, on the “Eurotrip” podcast, if Canada were to win the contest, it would be permitted to host the following edition on Canadian soil. This differs from Australia’s arrangement, under which the country committed to transferring hosting responsibilities to a European nation in the event of a victory.

Such a decision would set an unprecedented milestone in Eurovision history, potentially allowing the contest to take place largely in daylight for European viewers and giving new meaning to the traditional Grand Final sign-off: “Good night, Europe, good afternoon, America, and good morning, Australia.”

Canada’s Long Road to Eurovision

This is not the first time Canada and Eurovision have been mentioned in the same breath. In 2022, the “Eurovision Canada” format was announced, which was supposed to bring together the country’s 10 provinces and 3 territories for a local competition. The project, designed to ride the wave of the relative success of the American version, was ultimately canceled and never came to fruition. Rather than creating a separate competition, Canadian stakeholders gradually shifted their attention toward participation in the Eurovision Song Contest itself, following a path similar to Australia, which joined the contest in 2015.

Excitement surrounding a potential Canadian entry first intensified in 2025 when a surprising line appeared in a draft Canadian federal budget. The document explicitly stated that “the government is working with CBC to examine participation in Eurovision.” Now Canada has sealed the deal and officially confirmed participation!
