German composer Ralph Siegel submits a new entry for Dschinghis Khan to SWR ahead of the Eurovision 2027 national selection.
Is one of the most legendary and recognizable bands in contest history heading for a massive international comeback? Legendary German composer and producer Ralph Siegel hopes to make history once again and bring the iconic band back as Germany’s entry for Eurovision 2027, set to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria.
Siegel, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, confirmed in an interview with the German music portal “Schlagerpuls” that he submitted a new song for the German national selection for the next generation of the band Dschinghis Khan:
“We just submitted it, and now we’re very excited. I just want to be in the national selection. I’ve really submitted something great.”
Speaking to the newspaper “Bild”, Siegel added that he made it at the very last moment:
“I barely made it, the deadline was September 21st.”
The Next Generation of “Dschinghis Khan”: An Ambitious Project
Siegel previously announced that the “next generation” of the famous late-70s disco group is set to tour across Germany during 2027. Now, the legendary name may return directly to the competition where its international journey began.
Siegel emphasized in the interview that this is a particularly elaborate effort:
“I developed something relatively ambitious, but I believe that’s also necessary when it comes to such a global group. I hope the jury sees it that way too.”
German national broadcaster SWR, which has taken over the organization of the German selection process, declined to officially confirm receipt of the application from Siegel and the group. In an official statement, the national broadcaster noted:
“We ask for understanding that we cannot provide any information regarding the ongoing selection process or specific submissions for Eurovision.”
The official date of the German national final has not yet been determined, though it has been reported that it will take place during February.
“I Brought a Fantastic Song Out of the Coma”
Behind the new song lies a dramatic personal and medical story. Following a severe medical ordeal that included multiple hospitalizations and an induced coma this past July, Siegel shared that music helped him pull through:
“I brought a fantastic song back from the coma. It’s in my head, and I already know: it’s unbeatable.”
Siegel even compared the new composition to the massive hit that brought Germany its first historic victory at Eurovision 1982:
“I have the same feeling I had back then with ‘Ein bisschen Frieden’ (in English: ‘A Little Peace’).”
The Composer Most Synonymous With Germany at Eurovision

Ralph Siegel is regarded as one of the most prolific and prominent composers and producers in the history of German pop and Schlager music. Over the course of his career, he has released around 3,000 songs, the most famous of which is “Ein bisschen Frieden” (in English: “A Little Peace”), performed by singer Nicole at Eurovision 1982, securing Germany an unforgettable victory.
Siegel’s association with Dschinghis Khan began ahead of Eurovision 1979 in Jerusalem. Siegel created the group specifically for the contest with their eponymous iconic song “Dschinghis Khan“, which finished in 4th place and became an enduring worldwide hit. Over the years, Siegel has participated in Eurovision no fewer than 24 times as a composer for various countries (including Germany, Switzerland, San Marino, Luxembourg, and Montenegro).
Now, all eyes turn to the jury and the professional committee of national broadcaster SWR to see whether the legendary composer and the iconic band will receive the opportunity to compete in the German national final and aim for a return to the biggest stage of all.
