Two more artists are reportedly joining Melodifestivalen 2027, including a former runner-up and a singer behind a global viral hit.
Preparations are continuing in Sweden for Melodifestivalen, the country’s popular national selection. Swedish media have reported two additional names expected to compete in the upcoming edition, which will select Sweden’s entry for Eurovision 2027, scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. The reported names include a singer whose hit has surpassed 1.5 billion YouTube views and an artist who previously finished second in the competition and has recently returned to public attention.
Bishara Morad
In 2019, at just 16 years old, Bishara Morad made a strong impression on Swedish audiences. His pop ballad “On My Own” was co-written by Benjamin Ingrosso, the Melodifestivalen winner who represented Sweden at Eurovision 2018. Morad qualified directly for the final and went on to finish in second place.
Following this rapid rise, Morad largely disappeared from the public eye. He began reappearing on social media and TikTok in 2023, presenting a more mature look that prompted numerous reactions from fans who initially struggled to recognize him. Now at 23, he is reportedly ready to return to the competition. According to sources close to the singer, he submitted a song last year but was rejected. This year, he has finally secured the opportunity to compete. The report was published by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
Little Sis Nora
Another intriguing name reportedly joining the lineup is 30-year-old Nora Ekberg, also known as Little Sis Nora. Ekberg first gained international attention alongside her older brother, producer AronChupa, when the pair achieved a major hit in 2014 with “I’m an Albatraoz.” The song went viral worldwide, accumulated more than 700 million streams on Spotify and surpassed 1.5 billion views on YouTube.
Alongside the duo’s other releases, some of which attracted tens of millions of streams and appeared on prominent soundtracks, including “Little Swing” on the soundtrack of Marvel’s television series “Runaways,” Ekberg has developed a solo career in recent years. She is now expected to make her Melodifestivalen debut as a solo artist. According to Aftonbladet, her entry will reportedly be a K-pop-style song.

Melodifestivalen Format and Traditions
Once again this year, Melodifestivalen will serve as the Swedish national selection for Eurovision. This is the 64th year that the Swedish entry is chosen via this platform, through which all Swedish Eurovision representatives have been selected except for Sweden’s very first participation in Eurovision 1958, where singer Alice Babs was chosen directly, and excluding Sweden’s absences from the contest in 1964, 1970, and 1976.
Some of the interesting rules of the contest continuing into this year include SVT’s aspiration for 30% of the songs in the contest to be performed primarily in the Swedish language, and for at least 50% of the chosen songs to include female songwriters (women only, or a combination of men and women). Furthermore, an artist performing the song in Melodifestivalen that is chosen to represent Sweden at Eurovision is not guaranteed as the performer of the song at Eurovision itself, and this is subject to SVT’s discretion.
Melodifestivalen Structure from Last Year
- Heats (Deltävlingar): The competition consisted of five heats, with six songs competing in each. From each heat, the two songs receiving the most votes from viewers at home advanced directly to the grand final.
- Second Chance Round (Finalkval): The songs finishing in third place in each of the five heats were given another chance. This stage was held as a flash vote immediately following the fifth heat, from which the Swedish public chose the final two songs to complete the lineup for the final.
- The Grand Final (Final): The peak stage of the competition featured 12 songs competing for the ticket to Eurovision. The winner’s identity was determined by combining the votes of the Swedish public at home together with points awarded by international juries, split evenly at fifty percent for each side.
Will the Eurovision Powerhouse Continue the Tradition?
Sweden is considered a Eurovision powerhouse, having won seven times across 64 participations and sharing the title of “record holder for most wins” along with Ireland. Both countries have also produced the only two singers who have won two different Eurovision contests – the first singer was Johnny Logan from Ireland, who won Eurovision 1980 and Eurovision 1987, and the second singer was Loreen from Sweden, who won Eurovision 2012 and Eurovision 2023.
Sweden is considered a highly successful nation in the contest, reaching one of the top five positions no less than 28 times – finishing first seven times, second once, third six times, fourth four times, and fifth ten times. Sweden reached positions 6-10 another 17 times.
