Following the Netherlands’ confirmed comeback, the leading contender to represent the country has addressed the upcoming hurdles, explaining why her participation remains uncertain.

Could the controversies surrounding Eurovision 2027 drive away the leading contender for the Dutch ticket? As the country gears up for its comeback to the European stage, singer Davina Michelle, one of three shortlisted candidates, made it clear that taking part in the upcoming contest is not a simple decision. In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, she addressed the political debates surrounding Eurovision, emphasizing that whichever artist is chosen will need to navigate these pressures alongside a demanding tour schedule.

Geopolitics at the Core of the Dilemma

According to Michelle, anyone representing the Netherlands in the upcoming contest must enter with well-defined stances on geopolitical tensions and the ability to articulate them publicly. This challenge forms one of her primary reservations about entering the race.

“I think whichever artist takes part in the next edition needs to be particularly grounded in their views. You have to know where you stand regarding the conflict and be capable of speaking about it appropriately,” she noted during the interview.

Her remarks come amid preparations for the Netherlands’ return to the contest in 2027, against a backdrop of public debate and heightened scrutiny. Michelle has not withdrawn her candidacy, but her comments reflect genuine hesitation at this stage.

Touring Commitments Add Further Strain

Beyond external controversies, Michelle is also managing an intense professional schedule. The singer is currently touring across the Netherlands and other European countries, with plans already underway for an additional tour in spring 2027.

“We are already planning another tour for next spring. I just do not know if Eurovision fits into all of that,” she explained.

A Familiar Face on the Eurovision Stage

Michelle is no stranger to the contest. At Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam, she starred in the interval act The Power of Water alongside actress Thekla Reuten during the first semi-final.

While Michelle continues to expand her international presence, a venture that could naturally align with Eurovision, she has yet to commit to the stage. With the Netherlands confirming its return for Eurovision 2027 in Burgas, Bulgaria, following a brief hiatus, time will tell whether she pursues the opportunity. For now, her remarks signal neither an exit nor a confirmed ticket to the contest.

The Renewed Race: Who Remains in Contention?

Sources familiar with the selection process confirmed that three acts advanced past the initial screening stages prior to AVROTROS’s withdrawal decision in December 2025. Currently, three contenders remain at the center of discussions:

  • Davina Michelle: Viewed as the frontrunner, backed by a strong artistic identity and a mid-tempo ballad submitted for consideration.

  • Marnix Emanuel: An independent pop singer and songwriter.

  • Tangarine: A well-known folk duo featured on the final shortlist.

Navigating the Road to Burgas 2027

Industry observers expect the Dutch return to unfold under close public attention, given wider European tensions and debates across the contest.

“Selected participants will have to navigate a particularly sensitive climate while strictly adhering to the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) regulations regarding political neutrality on stage,” sources close to the preparations noted.

Behind the scenes, the Dutch delegation is also restructuring its operational team, expected to be led by Claudia van der Pas. Meanwhile, Dutch broadcaster NOS has already confirmed its intent to air both semi-finals, the Grand Final, and preview programming for the event in Burgas.

The Netherlands at Eurovision 2025

“C’est La Vie” is the title of the song performed by Claude, who represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2025. The Netherlands qualified for the Grand Final after placing third in the first semi-final with 121 points. In the Grand Final, the Netherlands finished in 12th place with 175 points, with the jury awarding the country fifth place, but the public at home ranking it only 15th.

Eurovision 2027: This will be the Netherlands’ 66th participation in Eurovision. The Netherlands joined the competition in 1956, was one of the seven founding countries, and has won it five times over the years. The Netherlands’ last victory was at Eurovision 2019 with the song “Arcade” performed by singer Duncan Laurence.
