During a recent meeting, North Macedonia’s public broadcaster voiced strong support for the country’s potential return in Eurovision 2027. Will North Macedonia return to the competition after five years?

For several months, the question of North Macedonia’s return to Eurovision has been stirring excitement among fans. After report suggesting North Macedonia might return to the contest, followed by a recommendation from the Macedonian broadcaster MRT not to send a representative this year, attention has now turned to the broadcaster’s plans for a potential return at Eurovision 2027.

Official Support for Participation in Eurovision 2027

During the latest meeting of MRT’s Program Council, held on December 11th, council members expressed clear support for participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027.

During the session, Council President Davor Pasoski briefed members on his participation in the General Assembly of the EBU, which took place earlier this month. He noted that discussions with EBU representatives highlighted their enthusiasm for the prospect of North Macedonia returning to the Eurovision stage in 2027, and their willingness to provide technical and organizational support to help facilitate the participation. This comes against the backdrop of the country’s decision to postpone its return to the contest for economic reasons.

During the meeting held this week, the Macedonian council also emphasized the importance of beginning preparations early, in order to ensure that the country is represented in the best possible way. This was highlighted alongside renewed support for local Macedonian music.

Just last month, the broadcaster announced its intention to revive and strengthen long-standing music festivals in the country, including Skopje Festival, which served as the selection platform for North Macedonia’s Eurovision representative in roughly half of its participations — in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002–2004, 2008–2011, and 2015.

Junior Eurovision 2027 in Skopje?

Another signal of North Macedonia’s seriousness toward the EBU concerns the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2027, in which the country has continued to participate regularly. MRT is also holding discussions with the European Broadcasting Union regarding hosting the contest next year. If approved, this would mark the first time North Macedonia hosts a Eurovision-related competition.

North Macedonia views such an event as a significant opportunity to showcase the country internationally, as well as an additional means to support and promote young musical talent nationwide.

A Stronger Return in 2027

The target of Eurovision 2027 is increasingly shaping up as a sensible move. It allows MRT to build a comprehensive Eurovision strategy, define a dedicated budget, and select a representative in a measured and professional manner. This is an approach seen in other countries that returned after a break — most notably Luxembourg, which made a successful comeback in 2024 following a long absence, after investing in professional and financial analysis of the contest.

In light of North Macedonia’s renewed commitment to its music industry and its development, the country appears to be moving with steady steps toward a potentially memorable comeback.
