Kevin Walker
Former football player Kevin Walker, who sparked significant interest when he unexpectedly reached the stage of Idol in 2013, is now making his way to Melodifestivalen. During his time on Idol, Walker successfully juggled his matches on the pitch with participating in the competition, all the way to winning first place. Shortly after, he joined Djurgården, and his music career paused. After retiring from football in 2024, Walker returned to the stage and refocused on music.
Love Stenmarc
Joining Kevin Walker is another Idol contestant, Love Stenmarc, who reached the final last year but ultimately did not win the show. For Stenmarc, participating in Melodifestivalen continues a family tradition, as he will be the third family member to take this stage. His mother, Hanna Hedlund, participated in the contest three times, and his father, Martin Stenmarck, competed four times – even capturing first place in 2005 with the song “Las Vegas” and earning the right to represent Sweden at Eurovision, where he finished in 19th place.
Caspar Camitz
Another name emerging from Idol is Caspar Camitz, who finished in third place in the 2020 season. Several sources have confirmed that Camitz is already locked in for Melodifestivalen 2027. “It’s hard to describe his song. It is unique – just like him,” shared a source who previewed the track he is expected to compete with.
Dom Första
Alongside the Idol alumni, artists who did not originate from the show but have also secured their spots in next year’s Melodifestivalen are the members of the trio Dom Första. The group was formed in 2021 and has since produced several successful hits, including “Stockholm läker sår” and “Be för mig“. Their song “Om du vill” even surpassed 17 million streams on Spotify.
Ulrik Munther
Third time is the charm for Ulrik Munther, who is now heading to Melodifestivalen 2027. This marks Munther’s third participation in the contest. In 2012, he competed with the song “Soldiers” and reached third place in the final, and a year later secured the exact same placement with the song “Tell The World I’m Here“.

Melodifestivalen Format and Traditions
Once again this year, Melodifestivalen will serve as the Swedish national selection for Eurovision. This is the 64th year that the Swedish entry is chosen via this platform, through which all Swedish Eurovision representatives have been selected except for Sweden’s very first participation in Eurovision 1958, where singer Alice Babs was chosen directly, and excluding Sweden’s absences from the contest in 1964, 1970, and 1976.
Some of the interesting rules of the contest continuing into this year include SVT’s aspiration for 30% of the songs in the contest to be performed primarily in the Swedish language, and for at least 50% of the chosen songs to include female songwriters (women only, or a combination of men and women). Furthermore, an artist performing the song in Melodifestivalen that is chosen to represent Sweden at Eurovision is not guaranteed as the performer of the song at Eurovision itself, and this is subject to SVT’s discretion.
Melodifestivalen Structure from Last Year
- Heats (Deltävlingar): The competition consisted of five heats, with six songs competing in each. From each heat, the two songs receiving the most votes from viewers at home advanced directly to the grand final.
- Second Chance Round (Finalkval): The songs finishing in third place in each of the five heats were given another chance. This stage was held as a flash vote immediately following the fifth heat, from which the Swedish public chose the final two songs to complete the lineup for the final.
- The Grand Final (Final): The peak stage of the competition featured 12 songs competing for the ticket to Eurovision. The winner’s identity was determined by combining the votes of the Swedish public at home together with points awarded by international juries, split evenly at fifty percent for each side.
Will the Eurovision Powerhouse Continue the Tradition?
Sweden is considered a Eurovision powerhouse, having won seven times across 64 participations and sharing the title of “record holder for most wins” along with Ireland. Both countries have also produced the only two singers who have won two different Eurovision contests – the first singer was Johnny Logan from Ireland, who won Eurovision 1980 and Eurovision 1987, and the second singer was Loreen from Sweden, who won Eurovision 2012 and Eurovision 2023.
Sweden is considered a highly successful nation in the contest, reaching one of the top five positions no less than 28 times – finishing first seven times, second once, third six times, fourth four times, and fifth ten times. Sweden reached positions 6-10 another 17 times.
