Montenegro’s Eurovision return in 2025 is supported by a cost-sharing model, easing financial burdens on the broadcaster.

Montenegro is set to make a dazzling comeback to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025, as the country gears up for its national selection event, Montesong 2024. This eagerly anticipated festival will see 16 songs vying for the chance to represent Montenegro on the grand stage in Switzerland. This initiative not only aims to select the country’s representative but also serves as a vital platform for young and unestablished performers to gain essential audiovisual visibility and experience..

Cost-Sharing: A New Model for Eurovision Participation

The festival, organized by RTCG in collaboration with the Association of Variety Artists and Performers of Montenegro, is set to invigorate the local music scene.  By collaborating with the Association of Variety Artists and Performers of Montenegro, RTCG has strategically alleviated much of the financial burden typically associated with participating in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Under the terms of this partnership, the Association will shoulder 80% of the Eurovision’s organizational costs, leaving RTCG responsible for only 20%. This arrangement significantly reduces the financial strain on RTCG, enabling the broadcaster to focus more on fostering local talent and ensuring a successful national selection process. This cost-sharing model not only facilitates Montenegro’s return to Eurovision but also exemplifies a sustainable approach to managing the expenses of such high-profile international competitions.

Empowering Emerging Artists

Montesong 2024 represents a significant opportunity for emerging artists in Montenegro. The festival is designed to encourage local talent, allowing them to showcase their work to a broader audience. “The organization of this festival is in the public interest, as it encourages local authors and performers to create new music,” stated RTCG in their announcement. This commitment to nurturing new talent is crucial for the development of the music industry in Montenegro.

Selection Process

The competition opens for submissions until October 1, 2024, with entries required to feature at least 51% of lyrics in one of Montenegro’s official languages. A panel of judges will evaluate the submissions, scoring them based on melody (50 points), lyrics (30 points), and production (20 points). Only songs that achieve a minimum of 75 points will advance to the final stage of Montesong 2024. If no song meets the required threshold, RTCG reserves the right to internally select an artist to represent Montenegro at Eurovision 2025.

The winner of Montesong 2024 will be determined through a combination of expert jury evaluations and public votes via SMS (50/50), ensuring that both professional insights and audience preferences shape the final decision.

As Montenegro prepares for its 13th Eurovision participation, the excitement surrounding Montesong 2024 is palpable. The festival promises to be a celebration of Montenegrin culture and musical creativity, setting the stage for a memorable representation at Eurovision 2025. With a renewed focus on local talent and community engagement, Montenegro is ready to make its mark once again on the international music scene.

Montenegro in Eurovision 2022

“Breathe” is the name of the song performed by singer Vladana, who represented Montenegro in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2022. The song was written by Vladana herself along with Darko Dimitrov, who has composed 11 songs for the competition over the years for Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Dimitrov’s most successful entry is “Proud,” which represented North Macedonia in Eurovision 2019 and reached seventh place. “Breathe” was performed in English and Italian and was dedicated to Vladana’s mother, who had passed away a year earlier from COVID-19. Vladana only reached 17th place (second to last) in the second semi-final with just 33 points. This is one of the most disappointing results Montenegro has experienced in the competition.
