The uncertainty continues: The Netherlands receives an extension from the EBU to register for Eurovision 2025. New deadline – November 1. Will the Dutch confirm their participation?

The Netherlands’ participation in Eurovision 2025 remains uncertain as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has granted Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS an extension to confirm their participation. This decision comes in the wake of Joost Klein‘s disqualification from the Eurovision 2024 final in Malmö.

Constructive Dialogue Between AVROTROS and EBU

Following a meeting between AVROTROS representatives and EBU Deputy Director General Jean Philip De Tender, the Dutch broadcaster has been given until November 1 to make their decision. This extension from the original September 15 deadline allows for further discussions between the two parties.

Optimism Grows for Dutch Participation

AVROTROS released a statement expressing gratitude for the extension, hinting at positive developments: “With a visit by EBU’s Director of Media Jean Philip De Tender to AVROTROS, the dialogue with the EBU has started. In order to give this constructive dialogue the chance of success, AVROTROS has requested a postponement for the decision on participation. The EBU has granted this postponement until 1 November, for which we are grateful.”

Eurovision Veteran Cornald Maas Advocates for Participation

A few days ago, Veteran Dutch Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas voiced his support for the Netherlands’ participation, stating: “I believe the best response is to participate and ensure a good song. It’s a better answer than staying home, sulking, and adding to the anger while the caravan moves on”.

Final Decision Awaited

While 28 countries have already confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland, the Netherlands’ decision remains pending. The final list of participating countries is expected to be announced close to the Dutch broadcaster’s decision date.

Netherlands in Eurovision 2024

“Europapa” is the name of the song performed by Joost Klein in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2024. The Netherlands qualified for the grand final after securing second place in the second semi-final with 182 points. However, the singer was disqualified and did not participate in the grand final due to a violent incident involving him and a camerawoman from the Swedish Eurovision production team.
This marks the second consecutive time that the Netherlands has not competed in the grand final and the first time in the contest’s history that a participant was disqualified just hours before the grand final.
