One day after declaring its decision would be made in October – Slovenian national broadcaster RTVSLO confirms participation in Eurovision 2025 to be held in Basel, Switzerland.
Slovenian national broadcaster RTVSLO has confirmed that Slovenia will participate in Eurovision 2025 to be held in Basel, Switzerland. Slovenia is the 30th country so far to express interest in participating in Eurovision 2025, following Austria, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Italy, Iceland, Belgium, United Kingdom, Georgia, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Israel, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Malta, Norway, San Marino, Spain, Serbia, Portugal, Finland, Czech Republic, France, Cyprus, Croatia, Sweden and host country Switzerland.
Registration Deadline and Withdrawal Option
It’s important to note that the deadline for registering for the Eurovision contest is set for September 15, 2024, with television broadcasters interested in participating required to notify the European Broadcasting Union of their intention to compete by this date. Importantly, participating countries are given the option to cancel their participation without financial penalty, provided they announce this by October 11, 2024 – so if the Slovenian broadcaseter reconsiders its decision, they can announce withdrawal until October 11.
Sudden Change in Decision?
RTVSLO’s confirmation of participation comes just one day after declaring it had postponed its decision regarding Eurovision participation until October. Apparently, the statement about delaying the decision was an expression of the broadcaster’s dissatisfaction with Eurovision 2024 held in Malmö, Sweden.
It’s worth recalling that following the events of the last Eurovision, RTVSLO published a document of questions, most of which concerned Israel. Ultimately, all the declarations and documents were devoid of content and did not affect Israeli or Slovenian participation in the competition.
Selection Process
RTVSLO has not released information regarding the selection process it will use to choose the Slovenian song and representative for Basel, although in a document published earlier this year it was revealed that they plan to bring back the national final that served them until 2022, “EMA”.
Slovenia in Eurovision 2024:
“Veronika” is the name of the song performed by Raiven, who was chosen to represent Slovenia through an internal selection by the national broadcaster. Slovenia advanced to the final after placing ninth in the first semi-final with 51 points, and in the grand final, they finished 23rd with 27 points.
This is the second consecutive time Slovenia has qualified for the final, matching their qualification streaks in 2014-2015 and 2018-2019. However, this is Slovenia’s lowest placement in a final since Eurovision 2014.
