How many songs were submitted for Melodifestivalen 2025? Swedish national broadcaster SVT closed the registration for the Swedish national finals, Melodifestivalen 2025.
After another successful year for Sweden, which reached ninth place in Eurovision 2024, thanks to the twins Marcus & Martinus who sang “Unforgettable”, the Swedish national broadcaster SVT is already in the midst of preparations for Melodifestivalen 2025. This competition will select Sweden’s representative and song for Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.
Melodifestivalen has been held since 1959 and has provided Sweden with seven Eurovision winners, including the legendary ABBA and Loreen, who made history by becoming the second representative to win Eurovision twice, in 2012 and 2023.
Melodifestivalen 2025 Registration is Closed – What’s the Next Step?
With the closing of registration for the local Eurovision national finals, Swedish television network SVT announces that 2,794 songs have been received for Melodifestivalen 2025, from which Sweden’s next representative will be chosen.
The 2,794 songs received by SVT represent an increase from last year when 2,624 songs were received. In total, we have seen fairly similar numbers in recent years:
- 2024 – 2,624 songs
- 2023 – 2,824 songs
- 2022 – 2,530 songs
- 2021 – 2,747 songs
- 2020 – 2,545 songs
Now, the national broadcaster will have to go through all the songs and filter out the 30 songs that will compete in Melodifestivalen 2025. 15 of these songs will be chosen by a panel of judges, and the additional 15 will be chosen by SVT itself.

Melodifestivalen 2025 Producer’s Statement
Karin Gunnarsson, the competition’s producer, stated after the registration closed:
“Closing the submission is the initial shot to work on the songs that will compete in the Melodifestivalen 2025. Just like last year, there are 30 entries that make up the victory, the songbird and becoming Sweden’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in Switzerland. I am now looking forward to starting the next phase of the selection process and it will be an intense and fun autumn. The goal is of course to get another Eurovision win and make a Melodifestival that offers both hits and great entertainment and that involves the entire Swedish people.”
Melodifestivalen 2025 – Format and Changes:
The Swedish Eurovision national finals lasts six weeks and will include five heats and a grand final. The five heats will each take place in a different city, and the final, as per tradition, will be held at the Friends Arena in Stockholm. From each heat, two songs that received the best results will advance to the grand final, which will contain 12 songs as every year. The winner will be chosen by a combination of public voting (50%) and jury voting (50%). The winner will represent Sweden at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.
Last year, 2024, they conducted a “second chance” round for all contestants who came in third and fourth place in each semi-final. After the fifth semi-final, they presented viewers at home with a collection of the third and fourth-place contestants from each semi-final, and after voting, the two who achieved the highest result by the audience completed the final picture. This year, only the songs that reach third place in each semi-final will get to compete for the last two tickets to the Swedish National final.
Among the songs that reached third place, two songs will be chosen to advance to the final using two different methods:
- The song that reached third place and received the highest number of votes during the semi-finals will automatically advance to the grand final.
- From the remaining four songs, a voting process will open, from which one additional song will join those advancing to the final.
Another change in the competition concerns the timing of song releases. Until now, the songs that advanced to the final were not released for listening on various music platforms until after the last semi-final, while those that didn’t make it were released immediately after the semi-final in which they appeared. Now, SVT has announced that they will release all the competing songs in each semi-final – one day before the performance, so that people can listen to the songs in advance and form an opinion about them, and of course enjoy their favorite songs earlier.
