Denmark opens song submission window for Eurovision national final “Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2025”. The competition will be held on March 1st.

Denmark has officially announced its intention to participate in Eurovision 2025, which will be held in Basel, Switzerland. This announcement came even before the conclusion of Eurovision 2024. The Danish national broadcaster, DR, confirmed that the beloved national selection show “Dansk Melodi Grand Prix,” which has been a staple since 1957, will once again be used to select Denmark’s representative for the prestigious competition.

Official Opening of Song Submissions

The submission window for songs in the Danish national selection is now open. However, the date for the announcement of the local competition participants has yet to be revealed. Based on previous years’ patterns, the Danish national broadcaster DR is expected to unveil the list of contestants during January.

The deadline for song submissions is set for October 27, giving artists about a month and a half to enter their entries. All submitted songs will undergo a thorough screening process, with only eight tracks selected to compete in the national final.

Submission Rules and Requirements for Danish Artists

DR has outlined specific rules that all song submitters must follow:

  1. At least one member of the songwriting team (composers, lyricists, or performing artists) must be a Danish citizen or have strong ties to Denmark (e.g., residency or marriage to a Danish citizen).
  2. Each song must be an original piece and cannot exceed three minutes in length.
  3. Submitters are required to provide both an audio version of the song and a live performance recording.
  4. All song submissions must be made online through DR’s official website.
  5. No songs may be publicly performed or released prior to the competition.
  6. There are no restrictions on the language of the songs.
  7. Selected artists must keep their participation confidential until officially announced by DR.
  8. All performances during the national final must be live.
  9. Employees of DR and their family members are prohibited from participating in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix unless special permission is granted.

New Submission Criterion for 2025

This year introduces a new requirement for submitters to include a live performance version along with their song submission. This change may stem from Denmark’s recent challenges in qualifying for the Eurovision final over the past four contests. Additionally, it’s speculated that this new rule could be a direct response to the vocal inconsistencies in the live performance of Denmark’s 2024 Eurovision representative, Saba. By requesting live recordings, DR aims to ensure that potential contestants can deliver strong live performances, potentially avoiding similar issues in future competitions.

Format of the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix

The format for this year’s national selection remains consistent with previous editions. Eight contestants will compete, with three advancing to the second round based on public SMS voting. The ultimate winner will be determined through a combination of jury votes (50%) and public votes (50%).

A Brief History of Denmark in Eurovision

Denmark made its debut in Eurovision in 1957 during what was only the second edition of this iconic contest. Over the years, Denmark has enjoyed notable success, securing three victories: first in 1963 with Grethe & Jorgen Ingmann, again in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers, and most recently in 2013 with Emmelie De Forest.

Despite its rich history and impressive achievements in Eurovision, Denmark has faced difficulties in recent years. The country has failed to qualify for the final in each of the last four contests, prompting a renewed focus on improving its chances for Eurovision 2025.

Denmark in Eurovision 2024

Saba, who won the Danish national selection, represented Denmark with her song “Sand”. Denmark failed to qualify for the Eurovision final, finishing 12th in the second semi-final with 36 points. This marks the fourth consecutive time that Denmark has not advanced to the Eurovision final, a new negative record for Denmark since the introduction of the semi-final system.
