Members of the duo Nebulossa, who represented Spain at Eurovision 2024, share in a special interview about the difficult period experienced by lead singer María following the criticisms at Eurovision.

María Bas, lead singer of the band Nebulossa, and the band’s producer Mark Dasousa recently appeared on the Spanish TV show “Socialité” to promote their new single, “Cotilleo“. The new song focuses on gossip and criticism, which led the conversation to the harsh reviews María received after their provocative performance of the unconventional lyrics of “Zorra” (in English: “Bitch”) on the Eurovision 2024 stage.

Criticism of Nebulossa and Its Emotional Impact

During the interview, María revealed that many of the criticisms she received after the competition caused her to burst into tears. After finishing 22nd in the contest, María explained that the new song is a way to try “in a relative perspective” to process what she and the duo have gone through since then.

“Because I’m in the background, she’s the one who received most of the harsh criticism,” Dasousa explained during the interview. He also described how the harsh reviews affected María: “I saw her crying at home, it affected her a lot. We were in the spotlight and people have the right to express their opinion, and we have the right to take it as a joke,” the producer explained.

María shared with viewers the criticism that hurt her the most: “The response that affected me more than anything was when they told me ‘Your family must be very ashamed of you’.” According to her, such comments “penetrate deeply” and cause real pain.

Finding Solace and Understanding

But alongside the pain, María also found comfort. According to her, some of her harshest critics retracted their words after re-listening to her previous song, “Zorra”. She proudly noted: “They wrote to us to apologize after hearing me properly and understanding me.”

It’s worth remembering that despite the song’s title, the song itself deals with issues of female empowerment and societal perceptions of women, especially in the context of derogatory language. The Spanish term “zorra” can be literally translated as “vixen,” but it also carries derogatory connotations similar to “bitch” or “whore”. The lyrics express criticism of how society views women negatively in many aspects. It’s a defiant anthem that challenges stereotypes, embraces female empowerment, and encourages women not to apologize for societal judgments.
