Germany has confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2025, to be held in Basel, Switzerland, but has yet to announce a selection process. Recent developments suggest a shift in the country’s approach to choosing its representative.

The German national broadcaster ARD has announced Germany’s participation in Eurovision 2025 but has left the selection process unclear. It has now been revealed that changes are coming, at least in terms of the production company involved. German media reports that after three consecutive years of producing the German national selection, “Bildergarten Entertainment” will not be part of the production this year. Karsten Roeder, CEO of the company, stated, “Bildergarten is not in talks with the German national broadcaster this year.”

“Bildergarten Entertainment” has been producing Germany’s national selection since 2022, making changes and adaptations to its format in collaboration with the German national broadcaster NDR. The selection show has undergone several name changes:

  • 2022: “Germany 12 Points”
  • 2023: “Unser Lied für Liverpool” (Our Song for Liverpool)
  • 2024: “Das Deutsche Finale 2024” (The German Final 2024)

Last year, despite being pushed to late-night hours, the show maintained steady ratings throughout the broadcast. The host, Barbara Schöneberger, won a German Television Award for her presentation. Nevertheless, NDR officials seem unsatisfied and have decided not to continue the collaboration with the production company for selecting the country’s Eurovision representative.

Potential Reasons for Change and Future Prospects

NDR’s official response on the matter is brief and concise: “We will announce soon how the German representative for Eurovision 2025 will be chosen.” The upcoming changes in Germany’s Eurovision selection format are likely due to the national broadcaster’s dissatisfaction with Germany’s recent Eurovision performances. Despite a decent of Isaak in 2024, the German national selection has a relatively negative reputation, having led to unsatisfactory results, including two last-place finishes in the final in 2022 and 2023.

Alongside the open questions about the nature of selecting the representative for Eurovision 2025 in Basel, it’s worth noting that in the last year, it was reported that well-known television producers in the German Eurovision world, Daniel Rosemann and Stefan Raab, presented a new plan for the selection method in which several German national broadcasters would work together.

Germany in Eurovision 2024

“Always on the Run” is the title of the song performed by singer Isaak, who represented Germany in the grand final of Eurovision 2024. The song was selected through a national selection process. Germany finished 12th in the final with 117 points, achieving 10th place among the juries and only 19th place in the public vote.

Eurovision 2025: This will be Germany’s 68th participation in Eurovision. Germany joined the competition in 1956, was one of the seven founding countries, and has won twice over the years. Germany’s last victory was in Eurovision 2010 with the song “Satellite” performed by singer Lena Meyer-Landrut.
