SuRie, the United Kingdom’s representative at Eurovision 2018, whose performance was interrupted by a stage invader, declares that she might return to Eurovision in the future. Will she be given a second chance to perform properly on the competition stage?

SuRie, who represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon with the song “Storm”, is one of the most memorable British representatives in recent years. She will be remembered not for an impressive result in the final, having finished 24th, but rather for an incident during her performance. An unknown person rushed onto the stage, snatched her microphone, and shouted, “Nazis of the UK media, we demand freedom!” Despite this interruption, SuRie impressively continued the rest of her performance after security removed the intruder. The competition producers offered SuRie another chance to perform due to the incident, but she declined.

Never Say Never to Eurovision

Surprisingly, SuRie revealed in an interview that she doesn’t rule out future participation in Eurovision. Is the British singer on her way to make a comeback for the United Kingdom in the near future? SuRie said she wouldn’t exclude future participation in the competition if given the opportunity, but she doesn’t see it happening in the immediate future. “Never say never,” she said regarding a return to Eurovision.

A Long-Standing Eurovision Passion

SuRie disclosed that her passion for Eurovision began at a young age, a decade before her participation in the contest. She submitted a song called “One Day Love Will Find A Way” for Junior Eurovision but wasn’t accepted. Her love for Eurovision is immense; before her participation as the British representative in 2018, she served as a backing vocalist for Belgium in 2015 and 2017. In the first instance, she was on stage with Belgian representative Loïc Nottet, and in the second, she played a more significant and involved role behind the scenes with Belgian singer Blanche. Despite moving to the forefront of the stage and ending the competition with a bitter taste due to the interruption of her performance, SuRie still feels love for Eurovision:

“It’s the most beautiful, brilliant production, produced and managed by the most talented people. Why wouldn’t you want to work with these people in some way?”

Working Behind the Scenes

SuRie described her role in the 2017 contest working with Blanche, who finished fourth in Kyiv with the song “City Lights“. In an interview, she detailed her role:

“I had more of a behind-the-scenes role working one-on-one with Blanche. And I don’t know what role we want to give it; psychoanalyst, guru, mentor, friend, supporter, I don’t know. But it was much more responsibility than I had with Loïc”.

Conclusion

In the coming years, we likely won’t see SuRie on the Eurovision stage. If she represents the United Kingdom again in the competition, she would get a corrective experience after an unsuccessful attempt to perform properly for Britain. Although she continued to sing professionally after the incident in her live performance in the final as if nothing had happened, her result may not have reflected what she could have achieved if everything had gone smoothly. As always with returning artists, it would be interesting to see what SuRie would bring to Eurovision a second time if she competes again.
