“Revolution is better than ‘Heroes’!”: Måns Zelmerlöw reveals more details about his song ahead of the Swedish Eurovision 2025 selection, where he returns to compete.

The Swedish Eurovision selection, Melodifestivalen 2025, kicked off last week with the announcement of 30 artists competing in the event, along with their songs and the songwriters. Thirty songs will compete across five rounds, culminating in a grand final on Saturday, March 8th. One of the standout competitors in the selection is Måns Zelmerlöw, the winner of Eurovision 2015 who reveals that the song he has chosen to compete with in Melodifestivalen 2025 is better than the one he won with in 2015.

Måns Zelmerlöw represented Sweden at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest and made history by bringing the country its sixth win with the song Heroes and one of the most memorable performances. he competed twice more in Melodifestivalenin 2007, where he finished third, and in 2009, where he placed fourth. Along with his Eurovision entries, he also hosted the competition in 2010 and 2021. Since then, he hosted the 2016 Eurovision in Stockholm, performed at various Eurovision events, and participated in performances dedicated to the Eurovision song contest.

Now, Måns speaks about his new song “Revolution”, which he will compete with in Melodifestivalen 2025:

“I think it’s a better song than ‘Heroes’. It’s very direct, very anthemic, big, and optimistic. The song’s theme is fighting, fighting for our world. Everyone can contribute, and every little bit helps make this world a better place.”

He also shares that his three-year-old son insists on listening to the song every night, which may help Måns with the young voter category.

It’s important to remember that returning to the Eurovision selection after winning Melodifestivalen and Eurovision is a significant risk! Therefore, it’s likely that Måns’s words are true, and this could indeed be a strong song that could lead to a Swedish victory at Eurovision 2025. Loreen also struggled to win again in Melodifestivalen in 2017 after her victory in Eurovision 2012, only succeeding several years later (2023).

Besides Måns, many past winners have tried to return to the competition, with some succeeding in returning. However, the majority were unable to replicate the success of their previous participation: Charlotte Perrelli, Alexander Rybak, Dana International, Carola Häggkvist, Lena Meyer-Landrut, and others.

Song Submission and Selection

The song submission window for Melodifestivalen 2025 opened on August 23 and closed on September 13. According to official information from SVT, a record 2,794 songs were submitted. Out of these, 30 songs were selected to compete in the contest, with one ultimately chosen to represent Sweden at Eurovision 2025, to be held in Basel, Switzerland.

Changes to the Competition Format

This year, the production team introduced several changes to the Melodifestivalen format:

  1. Qualification to the Final:
The format remains largely unchanged, with the top two songs from each of the five semi-finals advancing directly to the final. However, this year, only the third-place songs in each semi-final will compete for the final two spots in the grand final.
  2. Voting Updates:
The song that receives the highest number of votes across all semi-finals will automatically qualify for the grand final. Following this, an additional voting round will open for the four remaining third-place songs, from which one more song will secure a spot in the final.
  3. Grand Final Structure:
As in previous years, the grand final will feature 12 songs. The winner will be determined through a combination of public voting (50%) and jury voting (50%).

Earlier Release of Songs

Another significant change concerns the timing of song releases. Previously, songs that advanced to the final were not released on streaming platforms until after the last semi-final, while songs that were eliminated were made available immediately after their respective heats.

This year, SVT announced that all competing songs in each semi-final will be released one day before the show. This allows fans to listen in advance, form opinions, and enjoy their favorite tracks earlier.

Ticket sales for Melodifestivalen 2025 have opened on November 6th. The hosts for the event will be Kristina “Keyyo” Petrushina and Edvin Tornblom.
