Greece at Eurovision 2025: “Our staging will be different from what you’ve seen” – what is Klavdia planning for the stage in Basel, and what advice did a Eurovision winner offer her?

When watching Klavdia’s performance in the Greek national selection with the song “Asteromáta” (in English: “Starry Eyes”), it seemed that Greece was preparing a show that relied mainly on her vocals and the emotion she conveyed, with minimal artistic elements on stage. However, as Eurovision 2025 approaches, she is preparing to surprise everyone. Ahead of her upcoming performance in the second semi-final, she says that many surprises are planned for the stage in Basel – and everything will be different from what was seen in the Greek national selection.

Greek Revolution in Basel: “Everything Will Change from the Greek National Selection”

Klavdia revealed that the new performance in Basel will be completely different from the version presented in the selection:

“I can tell you that our staging will be completely different from what you saw at the ‘Ethnikos Telikos’. Nothing will remain the same; there’s going to be a big surprise for everyone”.

She carefully notes that rehearsals are going flawlessly, she enjoys them, and feels creative during the process.

“Honestly, everything is ready, I’m living the dream… the dream of being precise, and it’s a truly unique experience”.

Advice from Greece’s Eurovision Queen

Klavdia sees 2005 Eurovision winner, Helena Paparizou as her mentor, even calling her “the mother” and “the voice of wisdom” after they met on “Greece Got Talent” when she was 15. When she asked for advice ahead of the contest, Helena told her to stay calm throughout the process, listen to the artistic director and the delegation, and trust them. She also advised her to avoid distractions and focus solely on the song and the stage.

When asked about last year’s atmosphere, Klavdia made it clear that nothing would deter her from her goal and that she is here to enjoy:

“Eurovision is a music party where we are united through music, so I’ll act as if I’m invited to a party full of music. I intend to enjoy myself immensely, and nothing will ruin the experience for me”.

Klavdia – What’s Your Secret in the Competition?

Klavdia’s main goal is to deliver a performance that everyone will remember and, of course, to connect with people and the song. She sings about things long forgotten that evoke deep longing.

“I want people to feel something from the song, and to deliver a performance that will be remembered, so that when I watch it later, I can be proud”.

The song can be interpreted in many ways: the loss of a loved one, longing for someone close, a distant childhood memory that cannot be recreated, or, in literary terms, a forgotten love or exile and yearning for home. Any thought that lifts the viewer’s eyes to the stars, offering strength and hope. When asked what she most wants the audience to remember about her and her performance, she replied:

“Oh! My voice. That’s my one special instrument that I want to show the world and let people feel emotions, because I connect with the audience through my voice”.

Klavdia’s Victory in the Greek National Selection

Klavdia won the Greek national selection, competing against eleven other contestants. She came first in the public vote, first in the local jury vote, and third in the international jury vote.

She took the stage in a cream-colored outfit, tight shirt and flared pants, accompanied by five dancers in bodysuits. The stage was quite bare, featuring a backdrop of skies and lightning with a dark atmosphere. Her powerful and moving performance received much praise, marked by a clean and precise vocal delivery that emphasized her impressive vocal abilities and conveyed the song’s emotional message.

How Much Will Greece Invest in Eurovision 2025?

The Greek national broadcaster revealed the financial details for Eurovision 2025 in its annual budget report. The budget covers all competition-related expenses – from song and video production, through delegation costs, to participation fees.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • Production costs (performance, staff salaries, equipment logistics): €182,000.

  • Delegation travel and accommodation: €59,000.

  • Commentary booth rental: €18,000.

  • Participation fee to the EBU: €143,000.

This year’s budget is €20,000 higher than last year, when Greece spent around €380,000 for its participation in Malmö, Sweden. The participation fee has decreased compared to last year’s €176,000, but overall costs are higher due to increased production and logistics. The budget reflects the importance Greece places on the contest, despite economic challenges.

Greece at Eurovision 2025

“Asteromáta” (in English: “Starry Eyes”) is the song that will be performed by Klavdia, representing Greece in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2025, scheduled for May 15th in Basel, Switzerland. The song was written by the singer herself, together with the creative team Arcade, who previously wrote Greece’s Eurovision entries for 2020 and 2021, “Superg!rl” and “Last Dance”, for Stefania Liberakakis. The song is performed in Greek.

Asteromáta” deals with deep longing and pain over separation and loss, using romantic and poetic language. The singer addresses a loved one, calling them “my little star” and “starry eyes,” expressing her wish to be close, to feel their presence, and to find peace. Imagery such as “my dear mother, don’t cry” and “my old body, the flames won’t defeat it” evoke resilience in the face of hardship, with a deep connection to nature and the past, as referenced by “the sand of my roots” and yearning for a return home or to a safe place. Metaphors like “forgotten wings” and “sacred abysses” convey a search for inner connection and lost wholeness. Together, these create a picture of loss, but also hope for reconnection and comfort. The song’s poetic language evokes feelings of love, longing, and the desire for peace and solace.

Currently, Greece is ranked 19th in the betting odds for Eurovision 2025.

Klavdia – Who Are You?

Klavdia Papadopoulou, a Greek singer who rose to fame after participating in the Greek version of The Voice in 2018, is one of tonight’s most compelling contenders. Her mentor during the competition was none other than Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou, who guided her all the way to the finals.

For “Ethnikos Telikos 2025”, Klavdia collaborated with Arcade, a team of renowned music creators and producers who also wrote her entry “Asteromata“. The song blends modern elements with traditional Greek music, creating an emotional and captivating piece. With its melancholic tone, “Asteromata” draws inspiration from Klavdia’s family’s survival story during the Pontic Greek genocide – a deeply personal narrative that adds significant weight to her performance.
