Canada moves closer to Eurovision after a surprising statement by its finance minister, revealing the country was asked to participate in the contest.

Another non‑European nation may soon join Eurovision! Following Australia’s debut in 2015, Canada and its government are now showing growing interest in taking part. The buzz erupted after a small but surprising line was discovered in the country’s 2025 federal budget – one that has Eurovision fans worldwide excited and was approved by the finance minister.

Canada’s Eurovision Interest Revealed in Budget

The 2025 Canadian federal budget included the line: “working with CBC/Radio-Canada (Canada’s national broadcaster) to explore participation in Eurovision.” This marks the first time such a reference has appeared in an official Canadian document – and possibly signals that Canada’s Eurovision debut might be closer than ever.

Champagne: “It’s a Platform for Canada to Shine”

Canadian Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne was asked about this line in an interview following the budget announcement. He expressed genuine excitement about the possibility of participating in the European competition, saying, “We have a lot to offer as Canadians,” and that Eurovision “is a platform for Canada to shine.”

According to Champagne, Canada has indeed been invited to join the contest, though it remains unclear whether the invitation came directly from the EBU or from certain participating nations eager to see Canada alongside them.

For now, it is uncertain whether Canada could already appear in Eurovision 2026 or if discussions concern later years. Still, the intriguing budget note strongly indicates warming ties between CBC/Radio‑Canada and the European Broadcasting Union – potentially bearing fruit sooner than expected. If it happens, Eurovision would expand even further both geographically and culturally. And who knows – could the United States be next?

The Unrealized “Eurovision Canada”

In 2022, the European Broadcasting Union announced a planned competition called “Eurovision Canada”, envisioned as a local adaptation where each entry would represent one of Canada’s provinces or territories. At the time, it followed the short‑lived American Song Contest, which underperformed in ratings and interest.

Eurovision Canada was expected to launch in 2023, featuring artists from all 10 provinces and three territories — Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut. However, the project never came to fruition.

Eurovision 2026: The 70th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Austria, following the country’s third historic win with the song “Wasted Love” performed by JJ. This will be the third time the contest is hosted in Austria, after 1967 and 2015.
