Latvian national broadcaster LTV confirms 125 entries submitted for Supernova 2027, introducing an audience-only Superfinal on February 6th.
The Latvian national broadcaster, LTV, has revealed official figures marking the conclusion of the submission window for its local Eurovision preselection, “Supernova 2027”, which closed yesterday (Thursday). A total of 125 songs were submitted this year – a symbolic increase of one entry compared to the 124 songs submitted ahead of the 2026 season. LTV noted with satisfaction that the response reflects a rich musical spectrum and particularly fierce competition, bringing together established names from the Latvian music scene alongside promising new talents.
“Fierce Competition and a Broad Musical Range”
The Head of Documentary and Entertainment Content at the Latvian national broadcaster, Agnese Štrause-Kubliņa, addressed the quality of the submissions received:
“This year’s submissions demonstrate a very broad musical range and confirm that interest in representing Latvia at Eurovision remains exceptionally high. The competition this year will be fierce, as the contenders include both experienced, audience-favorite artists and newcomers with clear ambitions.”
At this stage, the national broadcaster’s professional jury will begin its evaluation. The jurors will assess the submissions based on criteria including originality, arrangement, lyrical message, alignment with contemporary market trends, vocal abilities, and the potential to compete successfully in the international pop music market. The list of participants selected to advance to the live shows is expected to be revealed toward the end of November.
The Superfinal Arrives in Riga: Format Change for the Big Show
The main broadcast of “Supernova 2027” will take place on February 6th, 2027, at the Xiaomi Arēna in Riga, in what is described as the grandest event in the history of the local selection.
Furthermore, a significant change in the competition format has been announced: for the first time, a special “Superfinal” stage will be held, featuring the top three songs of the evening. In this decisive round, the jury will award no points, and the winner and representative of Latvia for Eurovision 2027 in Bulgaria will be decided exclusively by the home audience (100% televoting). Tickets for the event are already available for purchase.

Latvia’s Achievements in the Contest

Latvia is considered a relatively struggling nation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Across its 26 appearances, it has won only once, on its third attempt, when singer Marie N brought home Latvia’s sole victory at Eurovision 2002 in Tallinn, Estonia.
Since joining the contest in 2000, Latvia has never missed a Eurovision Song Contest. The only instance where a Latvian entry was not staged was at Eurovision 2020, when the entire contest was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite Latvia’s persistent presence at Eurovision, it has recorded a significant number of non-qualifications, failing to reach the Grand Final in 16 editions. Five of those times, it finished last in its respective semi-final (in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2021).
Latvia continues to be seen as a country that struggles at Eurovision; since the semi-final system was introduced, Latvia has reached the final just seven times out of 21 appearances (in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2015, 2016, 2024, and 2025). Despite numerous absences from the Grand Final, Latvia has recorded several respectable achievements in its history, placing in the top five three times, alongside its sixth-place finish in 2015.
