Norway’s NRK opens submissions for Eurovision 2025 national finals, as Norway commences its search for Eurovision.
Norway’s national broadcaster, NRK, has officially opened the submission window for Melodi Grand Prix 2025, marking an early start to the country’s selection process for Eurovision 2025. The submission period began today and will remain open until September 1, 2024, giving aspiring artists and songwriters nearly a month to submit their entries.
Submission Guidelines and Eligibility
NRK has outlined specific rules for the submission process. While songwriters and producers from any country are welcome to submit entries, there is a strong encouragement for at least one Norwegian songwriter to be involved in each submission. This approach aims to prioritize and promote the Norwegian music scene.
Each songwriter, producer, or artist is limited to submitting a maximum of three songs. Additionally, performers must either hold Norwegian nationality or reside in Norway, and all artists must be at least 16 years old by April 2025.
After the submission deadline, a jury will select the participants for Melodi Grand Prix 2025 in October. The official announcement of contestants is scheduled for January 2025, building anticipation for the national final.
Looking Ahead
As Norway looks to improve upon its recent Eurovision performances, including GÃ¥te’s last-place finish with “Ulveham” in 2024, the early start to Melodi Grand Prix 2025 signals a renewed focus and determination.
This initiative also follows discussions between NRK and the EBU regarding the future direction of Eurovision. NRK has expressed the need for improvements in security, communication, crisis management, and working conditions at the contest.
It’s worth noting that Melodi Grand Prix has been Norway’s primary method for selecting Eurovision entries since its inception, with only one exception in 1991. That year, the event was canceled after NRK determined that the quality of the competing songs was weak, opting instead for an internal selection to choose the song for the contest in Rome. This long-standing tradition underscores the importance of the selection process in Norway’s Eurovision journey.
Norway in Eurovision 2024
GÃ¥te represented Norway at Eurovision 2024 with the song “Ulveham”. The band won the Norwigian national finals “MGP”. Norway advanced to the Eurovision final after placing tenth in the second semi-final with 43 points. In the grand final, Norway finished in 25th and last place with 16 points. This marks the first time since Eurovision 2012 that Norway has finished last, and the twelfth time overall since joining the competition.
