In response to the announcement of Greece’s Eurovision national final, local artists have commenced preparations, and the Greek broadcaster is developing a selection format expected to surprise audiences.

ERT, the Greek national broadcaster, announced last Wednesday that Greece will hold an open national final for the first time in 22 years. This decision has prompted artists across the country to begin preparations while the broadcaster develops the selection format.

The exciting announcement comes after Greek audiences demanded involvement in choosing the representative and song for Eurovision, following criticism of ERT’s selections in recent years. The submission window will be open to any artist wishing to represent Greece at Eurovision 2025 in Basel.

Growing Interest from Artists

Last week, 26 potential contestants expressed interest in competing in the national final. Now, more details are emerging about preparations and songwriting collaborations:

Music production team Arcade, known for working with Greek stars and Eurovision alumni like Eleni Foureira and Helena Paparizou, is interested in partnering with an artist to write a song. They previously co-wrote Stefania‘s Eurovision entries “Superg!rl” and “Last Dance“.

The songwriting team for singer Evangelia’s entry has been revealed. This is the same team that participated in a songwriting camp in the Caribbean islands in August and was involved in producing Marina Satti’s Eurovision 2024 entry, “Zari”.

ERT’s Preparations and Format Considerations

ERT is also preparing for the national final, with Eurovision fan site Eurovisionfun reporting that the broadcaster is considering the format. While planning for one final night with 10-15 songs, ERT is exploring adding preliminary rounds depending on the number of submissions received. This could make the selection similar to successful national finals like Sweden’s Melodifestivalen or Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix.

Interest in the national final continues to grow daily, with more artists expected to join the list of potential participants. Is this the beginning of a new era for Greece in Eurovision? Only time will tell.

Greece in Eurovision 2024

“Zari” is the title of the song performed by singer Marina Satti, who was selected through an internal selection process by the Greek national broadcaster. Greece qualified for the final after placing fifth in the second semi-final with 86 points, and in the grand final, they finished in 11th place with 126 points.
