The contestants and songs of the Portuguese national final, “Festival da Canção 2025,” will be revealed for the first time on January 23. Twenty contestants will participate in the selection to represent the country at Eurovision 2025.

Portuguese national broadcaster RTP is set to unveil the contestants for its national final “Festival da Canção 2025” on Thursday, January 23. Along with the participants, the songs they have submitted to compete for representing Portugal at Eurovision 2025 in Basel will also be revealed. The list of composers was already published in November, likely including some who will perform their own songs, as has been the custom in previous years.

Competition Structure

As in previous years, Portugal’s national final will unfold over three evenings – two semi-finals and a final, scheduled to take place during February and March. The first semi-final is set for February 22, followed by the second semi-final on March 1. The grand final will be held on March 8 at RTP studios in Lisbon, where Portugal’s representative and song will be chosen.

Selection Process

Each semi-final will feature ten songs, with six songs from each heat advancing to the final. This format has been consistent over the years. It is expected that 12 songs will compete in the grand final for the right to represent Portugal at Eurovision 2025.

Voting System

The winner of the final will be determined, as per annual rules, by a combination of public voting (50%) and jury voting (50%), mirroring the Eurovision Song Contest itself. This system ensures a balance between popular appeal and professional judgment in selecting the country’s representative.

Portugal at Eurovision 2024

“Grito” is the name of the song performed by the singer Iolanda, who was chosen to represent Portugal after winning the Portuguese national finals. Portugal advanced to the final after placing eighth in the first semi-final with 58 points, and in the grand final, it finished in tenth place with 152 points.

This marks the fourth consecutive time that Portugal has reached the final, a feat it had not achieved before. Additionally, this is the third time since 2021 that Portugal has ended up on the left side of the scoreboard, twice among the top ten. These are respectable achievements for a country that was until recently considered one of the least successful in the competition.

Eurovision 2025: This will be Portugal’s 56th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Portugal joined the competition in 1964 and achieved its best result in Eurovision 2017 when singer Salvador Sobral won first place with the song “Amar pelos dois.”
