The rumors and excitement surrounding Céline Dion’s anticipated comeback at Eurovision 2025 made fans believe the big moment was near. Now, months after the disappointment, the long-awaited explanations finally arrive.

Céline Dion, Eurovision 1988 winner representing Switzerland and one of the greatest singers of all time, was expected to make a historic comeback on the Eurovision stage in the country where she triumphed. In May, rumors spread about the singer’s presence in Basel, the host city of Eurovision 2025, and her preparations for a potential surprise performance in the grand final. Now it turns out the comeback was indeed meant to happen!

The Historic Comeback That Was Canceled

According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, after months of rumors and speculation, we now learn for the first time that Eurovision legend Céline Dion, was on the verge of stepping onto the Basel stage. However, the historic comeback was canceled at the very last moment due to her health condition. In May, a private jet linked to the singer landed in Switzerland, fueling excitement among fans worldwide.

The report confirms that Dion was scheduled to appear in the grand final as a surprise act, with secret rehearsals even taking place in Basel. But due to her ongoing battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome, the contract included a clause that allowed her to withdraw at the last minute for health reasons — and that is exactly what happened.

Despite not performing, Dion did not let go of the opportunity to send a message to the audience. Earlier that same week, during the first semi-final, she appeared in a recorded video, thanking her fans and Switzerland, the country that believed in her and gave her the chance to be part of such a special event. She added:

“Music is our strength, our support, especially in moments when we need it most”.

A statement that left hardly a dry eye in the audience.

Céline Dion’s Legacy

After her message, four representatives from Eurovision 2024 took the stage and performed together the legendary song “Ne partez pas sans moi”, with which Céline Dion won Eurovision in 1988. The performance became a symbolic moment that reminded viewers of Dion’s lasting influence on the history of the contest.

Even without a live performance, Céline Dion was one of the most significant presences of the competition. Her heartfelt message touched millions, and the tribute to her iconic song once again proved how a single piece of music can continue to resonate at Eurovision, connecting generations of fans.
